Re: purchasing boat out of state
Purchased mine from a fellow in Scottsdale, AZ. Brought it up to Las Vegas, NV.
for registration. Nv. Fish & Game told me there is no sales tax on watercraft when doing a private sale. Only if you buy it from a dealer.
It still was a pain in the rear dragging it around to both the F&G and DMV for the trailer ID. At the DMV he couldn't find the trailer ser # on it and stated it must be stolen/hot. I said BS. So he goes into his comfy air conditioned office and starts a search on it and I get on my back, on the hot asphalt looking for it.
Low and behold, there it was on the bottom of frame, right behind the spare tire holder,...welded in.
Then off to F&G.....She looks at the plate on the stern and says that all the letters & numbers aren't there. I say, what? She says "GLAN", is suppose to be stamped at the beginning of the hull #. (Because it's a Glastron boat).
I state that the plate is factory installed and they didn't seem to think it was needed. She states, "The state of NV thinks it should be there". And then says "She hasn't seen me or the boat yet", and to get the "GLAN" on there anyway I can and bring it back. So great, here I go dragging the boat to where I work to use the punch set and trying to make it look factory..
Try punching an aluminum plate riveted to fiberglass and making it look factory. It looked lousy at best. So then I head back up to F&G to make sure she doesn't get away. Thankfully she was still there and I didn't get someone else, I could here it now......"That plate looks fake/tampered with!!!!
Sorry for the long story, but what a pain in the butt to get a out of state boat/trailer registerd in another state. I guess $50 in gas and 5 hours of my time is still better then paying 7.75 percent sales tax on a $10,000 boat.
