anybody have any idea on getting this part? 1970 evinrude. My forward button doesn't stay engaged unless i keep pressure on it with my thumb.

edit: I've researched and found out that there is toggle switch conversion out there. Do I just need the specific toggle switch? I have a green, blue and a purple striped wire. I will install a cover plate most definitely to protect against accidental switch. Info on what type of switch and wire diagram would be appreciated.

Re: push button shift

Trouble with used ones is they may not be any good either. It's a chance you take. They are becoming hard to get and extremely expensive when you do find one. Try Sea-Way

Re: push button shift

this is a hydroelectric switch. this does differ from a selectric shift switch for the 40 hp electric shift model only correct?? I saw on one ebay right now.
http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...=m37&satitle=evinrude+shift+switch&category0=

this one is described as an evinrude selectric hydro electric shift switch. It has three buttons, but not sure if this will work??

Re: push button shift

I don't know what the rules are here as far as selling things. I have a 68 starflight with the controls which is a three button selectric shift. i'll sell the controller to you or list it on ebay. again, i don't if we are able to put contact info in the fourm.

Re: push button shift

On my 40 hp selectric, I just took the old push button switch out, and put a 20 amp toggle switch thru the center hole. I did install an aviation-style flip cover to somewhat prevent "accidents" like shifting into neutral or reverse at WOT, since there is nothing to prevent this once the lockouts are gone. Use at your own risk, as the lawyers say........

Re: push button shift

anybody have any thoughts on replacing this switch with a toggle switch? Can any other type switch be used to replace the original push button switch? I don't mind the toggle switch with a protective cover set up.

hey txwhaler I sent you a private message...

Re: push button shift

there is a post on here some where for doing the toggle switch. but it is not recommended, as there is no neutral safety switch, and the case of someone accidentally bumping the switch, and changing gears at higher rpms, will be devastating to the lower unit. i have come up with a push button, that could be used as a neutral switch, for just a little safety.

Re: push button shift

Toggle switch in it's simplest form--no safety features, but it will shift. Remove wires from push button switch and attach them to DPDT toggle switch like this. Don't come crying to me if you have an accident.

Re: push button shift/TOGGLE SWITCH UPDATE

Just out of fear of throwing motor into reverse from forward..

Re: push button shift/TOGGLE SWITCH UPDATE

Reverse comes in handy some times. Heres what i would do. I would put the reverse switch away from the other shift switches, then I would put another switch in between to actually turn the power on and off the reverse switch, that way even if you accidently hit the reverse switch no harm done

The Selectric shift was designed to be able to go directly to any gear from any other gear. In other words, you can be in forward and push the reverse button without first pushing neutral. That was an advertized feature. Only thing is, with the toggle switch you can do that at any speed including WOT, whereas the push buttons were locked out at high throttle positions. You can also put it in neutral at WOT. Neither one is very desireable.

Re: push button shift/TOGGLE SWITCH UPDATE

i just bought the switch. Seems to me a guy could buy three push button switches and wire them up just like the existing system.

toggle switch added. Sure is a lot easier than pushing all those buttons, but I can see the danger about shifting from forward into reverse.
