Pyle 4 Channel Marine Audio Question

I've got a Pyle 4-channel marine audio system (PLMRKT4A) installed in our travel trailer. Two speakers are outside. Two speakers are inside.

There is only one volume control for the whole system. The wife wants to be able to kill the inside speakers, but still have them playing outside.

I called Pyle Audio tech support. Both the operator and the technician I spoke with had very hard to understand broken English. I wasn't very confident that he understood what I was asking, which was basically could I disconnect two of the speakers without damaging the amplifier.

Although my engineering degree is covered with cob webs and a deep layer of dust, something is nagging at me regarding his answer that all I need to do is add a selector switch and just turn them off.

What do you audiophiles/techies/EEs think?

Here's the system: http://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PLMRKT4A/4-Channel-Waterproof-MP3-iPod-Amplified-65-Marine-Speaker-System

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but an option if you don't have any solution for your system is the Fusion Marine stereo. It has dual zone controls so you could turn up the speakers outside and still keep the indoor speakers relatively low, or vice versa. This is the one I have:

splice in a simple toggle switch on the speaker wires and plumb it somewhere accessible.

Yep, that's the safest way to go: adjust the balance or fader control (depending on how the speakers are connected; probably the latter) at the head unit.

Take a look at the link. That's the whole system. Just an amplifier with a gain control that effects all four speakers simultaneously.

Are you saying that you can simply turn off the unwanted speakers with an on-off toggle switch without damaging the amplifier? Although I gave away my Yamaha home stereo system years ago--the kind with five or six separate components and 5' tall speakers--it was my understanding that operating the amplifier without speakers installed would damage the amp.

Forgot to "reply with quote" on yours too. I think you two can figure it out.

Yes you can put a dpst switch in the speaker wires to the indoor speakers. (one wire from each speaker either the + or -) this will shut them off without damaging the amp.
