Hello everyone, I have questions regarding a 3.5 gallon metal yamaha outboard gas tank. I needed a tank to get an old Ted Williams 7.5 going and found the tank and fuel line/bulb on Craigslist for $35.

Anyway, it won't pump gas up to the motor. It has the omc type conector on the tank and goes right to the carb. It is leaks on the tank where the fuel is conected, and the float seems to be stuck down. If I need to replace that pump or connector I have no idea what it's called. A little help, I'm a novice outboard guy, since the only other motor I've owned was a Tanaka 300 (which is closer to a weed eater).

I hate to hurt your feeling's.....put it back on Craig's list and sell it...even if you take a slight loss. Buy a new tank at Walmart for $35 and a new fuel line hookup, you'll be better off in the long run. The old metal tanks were fine when new, but are a PITA now...I know, I have both a Yamaha 6gal and Merc 6gal metal tanks, both are headed to the landfill.

Personally, I think the plastic tanks are junk and I won't own one anymore. Way too finniky for venting. If your metal tank is not rusted and you take care of it it should last forever. I'm currently running OMC metal tanks from 1970 and 1952!

Anywhoot, take a small screw driver and hold the ball down on the motor connector. Then pump the primer bulb. If nothing comes out the bulb may be bad. Next, hold the balls open on BOTH ends - you should hear some air coming thru. If none, that confirms the bad bulb and it should be replaced.

If that's not the issue, remove the pickup tube from the tank and check for a crack or an obstruction.

The leak on the tank end is probably a bad o-ring on the connector.

If it's a Yamaha fitting on the tank & an OMC fitting on the hose it will leak even though they do fit together & look the same.
