Ya,

I think $300.00 is too much for that boat. He should be giving it to you. That boat will need a complete rebuild and will cost at least $5K to make right (and that's if the motor and drive are salvagable). I highly recommend looking for something in little better shape. Don't get emotionally attched too quick. ;)

I don't know the length of this boat. My buddy has a 21' Starcraft Chieftain which is an aluminum cuddy. It's got a 90 on it and it's quite a turd. I'd think you'd want a 140 minimum. That's still a 4 cyl at least. 150s are usually V6's.

Its a 17 ft boat. Guess I will consider motor options higher than 85 then

Great I already like it too much...dang! Guess I will have to consider which project is best- either this pos or another boat in better shape. Either way, at least the labor is mostly free...maybe not the best, but free!

In the pics it looks bigger than 17', the smaller motors should work OK if it's that small.

OH...you know we will support whatever you decide. I just don't want you to get half way down the road with this thing and give up. You won't be able to recoop any money or time spent. Not even the $300.00 purchase price.

Really...that thing is only 17'. Looks like at least 21'+.

I learn something new everyday. At first I thought $300 was nothing for a fixable boat and trailer but I guess this isn't like repairing classic cars or anything, where a rusted hulk of a car still goes for a grand. I'm glad I've got iboats for support and info, bc lord knows what the heck I am getting myself into
I think the boat might look much bigger because of the lack of scale since I took them all close up with a cellphone.

Well it's like this...anything is possible. Right! I will give you a car analogy. Buying an old boat is like buying a 1971 Pinto. You could put all the money in the world into restoring it but in the end you will still have a 1971 Pinto. Not the same as a 1971 Yanko Camero where in the end you have a priceless item. It's even a little worse with old boats because almost in every case you don't end up with a boat worth more than the time and money sunk into it. People generally restore boats because they are 1) gluttens for punishment, 2) in the end will use the boat for a long time, 3) want to learn about something they have never done before. If you meet all three marks then by all means go for it. Just know you won't get out of it what you put into it other than the pure joy of boating...which is priceless. :D

Haha great analogy. Well at least if I decide to take this on I will get much more pleasure out of it once I am done then I would a Pinto! I will probably start a thread on rebuilding the thing if I get it. I know that there will be many questions to follow

That through hull fitting looks like it might have been from an old style marine toilet. The transom looks really interesting to me. Is it possible that this was converted from an OB?

Yes I think it was. With the I/O ripped out it is pretty apparent that the original transom dipped down below that wooden area you see in the top center of the transom. Im going to convert it to an outboard again

One thing about it you will be the only one with a boat like that. I like it. If you are committed go for it. Once you are done you will look back and say I should have been committed. Post on up if you are going to tackle this baby.

This is the best description of me I ever heard!
