question re: primer application/for Bond-o

Through another thread, it was noted that anything aluminum on my Merc 1500 will need zinc chromate primer. I had already primed the cowling with regular Rustoleum automotive primer. My question is, will all of that need to be sanded off down to the metal, or can I spray the zinc chromate over it? Thanks!

If you want the anti-oxidation benefits of the zinc chromate, it has to be applied directly to the bare, acid washed aluminum.

Just use a chemical paint stripper. One that is safe for outboard cowlings...LOL! Good Luck!
