Well, old Oly, my '54 15 HP isn't running so smooth anymore. Next to last time we were out it started running on one cyl for about ten min and then went back to two and ran fine the rest of that trip. Last time out it started and ran fine out to our fishing hole. Started it to head back and it ran fine for a couple of min and then just died. Got it to start a couple of times and only ran for about two sec. and died. Went back to ramp w/ elec motor. Got it in the test tank today and it did the same as last time. Pulled flywheel to check points and found the coil insulation is cracked badly on both. Am I to assume(hate using that word!!) this is the cause of it dying?See attached pics.
Other question is the recoil supposed to have 1/16" cable or 1/4" rope? It had the cable when I bought it but I noticed when I took the recoil off the cable has cut a groove in the recoil housing where it comes out to attach to the pull handle. The hole in the spool where the cable end is clamped appears large enough for 1/4" or maybe 3/16" rope. Could someone tell which way this should be? I think it's rope because of the groove cut, just wanted to be sure. Also see attached pics.
TIA for any help you can give,
Mike

Coils need replacing. While you're in there might as well replace the points and condensers. Motor originally had a rope pull start.

The original pull cord was bronze wire cable covered with braided cotton stuff. The cotton rots and falls off, leaving the cable. You see the result---a grooved recoil housing. That groove will probably wear out a nylon rope in short order. You need a recoil housing (ungrooved). I believe the rope is 7/32".

Those coils are garbage. Replace them.

Thank you Lindy & FR for the info. I suspected the coils needed replacing and yes, I'll order points and condensers also.
I'm going to try filling the groove w/ JB weld and smooth out the inside w/ my Dremel. If that doesn't work I'll try to locate another recoil housing.
Again, thanks for the help,
Mike

Ahh Yes....antique coils.....gotta love 'em.:D Probably the originals. The new ones should outlast the motor now.

Thanks also for the info and opinions Zephyr and Ott. I filled the groove in the recoil w/ JB weld and smoothed it out. I think it'll work OK, I'll keep an eye on it. Also had a groove cut in the cowl and got it filled and smoothed w/ JB weld.
