Re: Questions for getting engine started

Tried directly from battery to starter and it didn't get enough juice to turn the fly wheel.

Took spark plugs out and turned flywheel by hand. I can turn it fairly easily but it still seems to bind at least once every revolution. Is that normal? Should it be harder to turn at some positions?

Tried turning engine over without spark plugs and it turned fine. Got enough power to turn flywheel for as long as I held the key. Put plugs back in and tried turning it over and it still turned fine. Then after a couple tries of turning it over there wasn't enough power left in the battery. Put the battery back on the charger and it showed that is was about 25% charged. I took my battery back today and got a new one. I will try that one tomorrow.

Replaced spark plugs and engine almost started. It maded a sound like it was firing and then I saw a little puff of smoke. It did this a couple of times. However my battery doesn't have enough juice left after about 4 tries and the starter is hot to the touch. Does that signify a bad starter?

I had same problem. I had to add a ground wire to the starter. It worked. That was after I had bought two batteries and sandpapered all connections and tore down starter and cleaned it 3 times. But the ground wire did the trick. Saved me a lot of money on a new starter $175.00
Good luck

Re: Questions for getting engine started

Took into a mechanic and he said that something is causing binding in the block. To take it apart would be three hours labour and then the problem may or may not be fixable.

So I am going to part with the Chrysler. If anyone needs parts off of it let me know.

boatrookie, if you want to get an idea whether something is in the cylinder binding it, without tearing it down. simply take the plugs out and stick a telescopic magnet in the hole and swirl it around, broken rings or reeds will stick to the magnet, then you should know whats involved.
its not a 100% method because the larger broken pieces will be jammed into the top of the piston, but there should be small pieces also.
try it out! ;)

The mechanic took the head off and couldn't find the problem.
