Questions - Overhaul.

It's a continental for my 23 footer. The decal is unreadable.

I would like to had disc brakes on all 4 wheels. After some reading on this forum, I came across one thread with info on some plate required to had the brakes. Since the thread starter had the "required plate" that topic was dead.

I don't see a plate of any sort on my axles. How can I add the the disc brakes anyway? Is there a kit that will include the required plate?

Also I can't find a 3 1/16" wide X 9" long U-bolt for the bow keel roller. I have searched countless websites with no luck. I thought about 2 plates with bolts but I could not find the plates in stainless.

Do my leaf springs need to be replaced? Does it need an upgrade? Or is it good enough?

Thanks

Re: Questions - Overhaul.

The 'plate' in question is probably the caliper mounting bracket. From what I know, that bracket needs to be attached to the axle (welded??) and then from there, you can mount your disk brake kit (caliper, rotor, brake lines, etc.)

I was informed that springs need to be replaced if they are cracking. Examine the springs when you sand them down and repaint them.

If you can't find the u-bolt you need (have you checked McMaster Carr?) than you can bend some threaded rod into the length you need.

Re: Questions - Overhaul.

I've done more research on the brake flange. I don't have the flanges installed for sure. etrailer.com does sell the part though for around 5 bucks a piece etrailer.com/c-tpbamf.htm". Now my next question would be, how would the welder know where EXACTLY to weld the flange? I'm looking for a mearsurment of some sort.

reliabletool.com/products/s2500a.htm has some measurements.
RELIABLE HINTS: If tip of spindle to tip of spindle is known, subtract 4.71 to get hub face. If brake flange face to brake flange is known, add 6.09 to get hub face.

So the measurement is 3.045 would be the from hub face to brake flange face. This should be standard.

Can anyone confirm this measurement?

Thanks

Here's what you need;

cerka.ca/catalog/52.asp

They're 2 miles from me, but you may be able to source the part #'s locally.

I had the same situation. I decided to get a new axle because you can't weld the backing plate on perfectly without a jig. If it isn't mounted perfectly, you will get increased brake wear.

Re: Questions - Overhaul.

I have 3500 pound rated dual axles. the current setup has only 1 leaf per tire. I've found 1750 # leaf setups with 3 and 4 leafs.

Should I find a 1 leaf rated for 1750? Or is the 3 or 4 leafs per tire better? And why?

thanks!!!!

From your photo it is hard to see BUT the one leaf looks REAL thick at the axle U-Bolts

I have never seen a single leaf on a trailer that size

no point in using a stainless plate, your trailer is galvanized. use gal plate and bolts. there is a great shop in Ft Pierce, that repaired my trailer, when i had an incident on I 95. will look them up.

these guy were great, built a complete undercarriage on Saturday morning. got me back on the road to the Keys.

1750# is 1750# so it doesn't matter. However, springs can break. If the single spring broke, bad things can happen, especially if its a slipper style spring. If any leaf in a multi-leaf spring breaks, nothing serious happens unless its the main leaf that breaks and it breaks ahead of the axle.

Wouldn't stainless resist rust better than galvinized?

There isn't any welding in my overhaul. It's basic remove and replace worn, rusted, out dated parts with stainless where ever possible to extend the life of my trailer.

and also cost more, possible metalurgy reaction, use galvanize as all the other metal on the trailer is galvanized.

It's the old wet brillo pad on the stainless steel sink issue. The existing parts will probably cause the stainless to rust wherever there is contact.
