Questions regarding OMC Sterndrive

Just bought a boat with IO 3.0L Stinger OMC . I have owned a lot of outboards in the past but not many IO's, Can anyone tell me what maintenece I should do on this right away? Its an 84 so i dont want to spend a ton of money on it as I didnt pay much for the boat. I just replaced lower unit oil but have been reading about gimball bearing and great the top fill(whatever that is?) On the tilt and trim should i throw some grease on the teeth? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

How much one pays for a boat, and how much one spends to keep it running are generally INVERSELY proportional, not proportional

Your stringer drive doesn't have a gimbal bearing. But you can do a visual on the ball gears. And on that note, never run the engine with the drive tilted in case you didn't know that already.
General rule for any new boat or motor purchase is to change the water pump impeller, and with a stringer an important part of that is greasing and inspecting the water pump shaft splines. That would top my list.

If mooring the boat, I would also pressure test the upper gearcase before launching. If trailering I wouldn't do that right away.

Don't grease the tilt gear, but do grease the three grease fittings on the drive - two trunnion bearings and one swivel bearing.

You probably figured it out by now that you need a manual. I would get the factory OMC one from outboardbooks.com or ebay.

There are 4 separate oil compartments on your drive. (Intermediate, Upper, Lower and Tilt Clutch) To keep it simple you can use 80W90 in all 4.

I see your other thread where you say the upper is fill of water already (creamy grey) - sounds like this needs to move up as far as priorities go.

How do you know when they clutch assembly is no good.. I have basically the same drive and it only raises a couple of inches. I took the clutch assembly out (clutch plates) and ran it and it when up and down no problem. I have a manual but it only goes over the fluid changing, any ideas?
