I struggled with this decision and I ultimately decided to go with Durabak. The stuff is comfortable to walk on, it seems very tough and resistant to scrapes/scratches, and I'm very happy with it.

If you want to paint the bilge, use gel coat, there will be no special prep work, it will hold up to anything, plus you will already have it on hand. Keep it simple.

I second this suggestion.

Awl grip is good for engine compartments .. but Gel is the cats meow for bilges or lockers.
