Bought a new boat today! Pictures will come soon as I clean her up a bit. 1971 Aquasport 19-6 with a johnson 140.

Trim motor is bad. I verified by tapping with a hammer(maybe banging).. I was able to get it working for a couple minutes but it is working at about 10%...

So I need to remove the pin on top pictured below but then what? I assume some bolts somewhere. Also how to you remove the C clips without a tool that grabs the holes?

Also this is a saltwater motor so hopefully that pin isn't to hard to get out. I am going to buy a brass punch, bring my propane torch and a small sledge.

BTW this pic was stolen and isnt my motor.

You need a snap ring pliers to remove the clips on the top. A small screw driver will help take off the bottom retaining rings for the thrust rod. After removing both pins the t/t unit comes right out. No bolts to worry about. If this is a salt water mtr as said, keep the brass drift, bfh and torch handy.

Can you point out or tell me where the second lower pin is?

Seems like you would be able to knock that pin out with a punch and hammer after removing any C-clips on the pin.

So it seems..

Ive heard bad things about what saltwater does to that pin.

almost 20 years of it and i'm not looking forward to it.

So to clarify I have to remove 2 pins not just the top one right?

Yes, you have one on the bottom also........That may also have the same pin retainers you have on the top.

There's a pin on the top and a pin on the bottom and they both have C clips on them.

I removed the top reasonably easy but the bottom wounldn't budge.

It was actually pretty easy to remove the motor with only the top pin removed and I wouldn't even bother with the bottom if I had to do it again.

You have to use a socket extension and lift the motor up to its max postion(not the locked position) basically the motor is almost parallel. At the point you can get the socket on the bolt with a bit of an angle(may be a problem if really tight).

Just hope it doesn't break if it's been in salt water. Been there.

What broke in particular?

I already got the motor out and putting the new one in the more morning. Top pin = easy and you can replace the motor that way.

If the unit fails down the road I would be in for some trouble.

I was talking about the bolts that hold the mtr to the t/t unit hsg. Go buy a lotto ticket, LOL
