So I bought a boat without an engine, and I found a dude with an engine.

Orginally , he promised me a LH rotation engine for my boat which is exactly what I needed.

But then sent me an email saying all he has is a RH rotation motor, and has agreed to give me the Engine, Drive and prop for the RH rotation setup.

Motor is a 4.3 mercruiser with a Alpha 1 drive.

So I have the following questions

1 -“ is there such a thing as a LH or RH rotation Sterndrive?
(I understand the prop is different, but what about the sterndrive?)

2 -“ Can I use a RH rotation engine with the Stern drive I have from the boat I bought without an engine?

3 -“ how hard is it to convert a RH rotation motor

4 - will a RH rotation fit in a LH rotation engine location? ( the Gimble is the old one) I read the starter is in a different location.

1 Have never heard of or seen a RH 4.3 motor, engine rotation is determined by looking at the flywheel CCW ,viewed from the pullys ,it would CW
Most outdrives are standard rotation (CW) , counter -rotating is done in the lower unit CCW
2 No
3 front and rear main seal are different, timing gears instead of timing chain
4 Yes, the motors are the same dimentions, but there never was a RH 4.3 motor

As I understand he recycled a boat buying it cheap and parting it out, and from what I gather he is selling me the engine, and giving me the stern drive and prop from the RH side.

in my limited research, I have discovered a lot of conflicting stories, but from the last bit I read on sterndrive.com (i think)

is all mercruisers engines are LH drive, and the stern drives them selves are LH or RH.

at the very least, it sounds like I am going to get a LH motor no matter, and then have a spare outdrive if I want to go RH or part it out?

does that sound about right to you guys

btw, as always you guys are a god send in helping me getting going :)

All STERN DRIVE engines are LH, but RH is an option for INBOARDS. When twin stern drives are installed, the way to get counter-rotating props is to install a counter-rotate gear housing (lower unit) on the port side.... The starboard (right hand) engine and drive (regardless of whether it's an inboard or a sterndrive) should be standard rotation....
