Could over filling a DP-C1 with oil cause it to shift hard from foward to reverse. I thought maybe my cable was going bad, but tonight i noticed that the unit is indeed over filled. Im probably 1/4" above the max oil level line.

not really, it may however burp a bit on a long run and push oil out your front seal.

hard shifting, if indeed from the upper gear box can be had from running it low on oil.

most likely your shift cable needs to be adjusted and possibly replaced

It is VERY important that the idle RPM is set to the proper spec. If idling high you will get a hard shift. And with a low RPM it will not go into gear unless revved and then it will be a hard shift.

The spec for the volume of FULLY SYNTHETIC 75W90 gear lube for the C1 is 2.7 liters or 2.8 U.S quarts. Personally, I put about 2.9 liters in my C1. I know, I know .... Volvo engineered the drive and set the spec......

What should the idle RPM be? And how do you adjust the cable? I'm trying to figure out how to get my control unit apart so i can see whats going on behind there, but its proving difficult.

You adjust cable at drive end (under shift cover). Idle at 650 in the water

I just wanted to add that that's 550-650rpm in idle forward gear. That confused me once upon a time. Idle in neutral will be slightly higher. Also important that the boat is in water providing resistance on the propeller.

If you take the shift cover off the drive, you'll see where the shift cable attaches. Unhook it, place the helm shift control in neutral, manually place the drive in neutral, and adjust the connection on the cable so that it lines up.

Ya the drive goes from neutral to revers or neutral to forward easily. Its going from forward or reverse into neutral that is hard.

Properly adjusting the shift cable is a common fix to difficult shifting. Hell, a couple weeks ago mine got so bad that I had to grab the control with 2 hands and pull it back to neutral. A couple minutes adjusting the cable and its smooth as butter now.

Yes, overfilling a Volvo will definitely cause it to shift harder.

Super Tech 75w-90 Synthetic blend. Its the cheaper walmart stuff. I only plan on using the boat a couple times before winterizing and putting better in.

Don't know if it's your problem but since Volvo calls out for GL-5 FULL Synthetic, I would be putting that in in the future.

Well this stuff is GL-5 Synthetic blend. I dont know if it really matters if its synthetic or full synthetic. But anyways.

Quality of lube matters sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. Sounds like it might matter in your case. Overfilling can cause your problem, as can proper shimming of the shift shoe.

Is this the shift cable you wanted to lube in an earlier post?
Or did you put a new one in?
Did you adjust for neutral as described in post #6 ?

Maybe you should change the cable and get back with us. I remember that thread.

Out of curiosity, have you removed the cable from the shift linkage at the drive to see how much friction the cable is giving you just by itself?

From the old man himself: Re: Supertech gear oil

Just like any oil thread, and this one is from March, we have people posting to it forever with the same ole sh** , goes like this.

I use (__Fill in the blank___) and it works perfect.
