Quick question on water tube - 1984 Evinrude 8hp longshaft

Late last year I had issues with steam coming out of the exhaust, so I replaced thermostat and head gasket. Took it out one last time and still had some steam coming out, but not sure if this is normal as I have not had the motor long and the water was getting colder...So I checked the water pump today figuring it was due to be replaced. It was old, old pc broken off, other edges were intact but worn and bent so that they were not rubbing against the housing...so yes time to replace. The question I have is whether the water tube can be removed without removing the power head. I know there is a grommet up there, but unsure if it can be replaced without a major operation....The pic I found online would appear to show that is not possible, but thought I should ask anyway. I have a manual for the lower unit but not the whole manual....Was trying to cover myself just in case. Hopefully the new pump kit along with previous repairs does the trick. Is it normal for SOME steam to come out the exhaust port?

Do not try to remove the water tube without removing the powerhead!! To test for flow, attach a hose directly to the tube and flush through. removing the thermostat makes it a bit easier.

I think it flows OK but will make sure.... was just wondering if it was shooting some water up against the power head and causing some of the steam perhaps. I did get this motor stuck in some grass last year and some of the issues started afterwards, although I did not notice the steam issue for 2-3 weeks later. We went out into a very narrow lake and when we got back to the ramp area a tree had fallen and blocked our way. Was getting dark and with no help we ran through some floating grass, being careful to watch the pee stream etc....but we got stuck and was bear to get out. I ran it in the barrel at home and cleaned it but might have over heated some. After checking the flow I will repair the pump and run it a while and watch the plugs and so forth to see if there is any water getting into the cylinders...Thanks!

BTW here is the last running of the motor....on cool day about 65 degrees or so.

You know I just went back and looked at a post I did on this motor last fall... Catamount told me that the lower water tube grommet might be the culprit. blowing water up onto the powerhead...so I will remove the stat, test the water tube per Haffiman's post and the grommet is in the kit I bought so maybe this will do the trick. Will post back in a few days for a rundown....Hope to use this old boat soon, as weather is getting good!

Remove and check that thermostat is not blocked.

JS...I've blown water up the water tube with a hose and lung power < visualize blowing up a ballon >...gulp of water in mouth, force water up, seal hose with thumb, gulp of water, repeat, etc....you can't generate much more than a couple of pounds of pressure doing this <unless you're one of the "gifted" who blow up the hot water bags until they explode>...it'll give you an idea of the restriction, if any, that exist...it may make the neighbors and kids shake their heads, but hey..what's new in that?

If I had a nickel for every time THAT happened! :D

BTW, my motor, being a longshaft, there is a question on reassembly I had. The L/U manual does not address it but I have an extra section on mine....So when I removed the three bolts and removed it I also had to remove the added section to get to the pump. Only two screws for that...When putting back together should I attach the added section to the motor THEN add the LU or add the section to the LU and then install? Any need for sealant on the sections?

changing water pump impeler you font have to remove 5" spacer,
just take out long bolt going from top of this 5" spacer and 2 smal bolts under cavitation plate

That is the problem...I did that already....I removed the long bolt and two smaller ones on the space, entire thing came off, then removed the LU after removing the other 2 bolts. I did not see any sealant on the parts so I am assuming they don't need any to go back together...on the other hand, I have been wrong before....I guess then I would put that on first, then the LU.

yes, there is no selant or gasket between spacer and midsection or lower unit.
lower unit is atached to spacer by 2 bolts just under cavitation place(look from under, there is small metal piece and 2 bolts)
