Radar or Gps .

Radar or gps whitch is better to have ?i have done some research but it is kind of conflicting.

They provide different info. Albeit at times overlapping info.

A GPS/plotter with a chip for your specific area will show you where shippping lanes are, buoys, submerged rocks..ect. But doesn't tell you where boats are.

Radar will tell you where land and others boats are a specific moment.


Get a GPS/plotter first and if you have extra $$$ get Radar. And if you get both get a network setup from Furuno or Garmin for example. Furuno is just coming out with NavNet 3d which is going to be the best yet.

Tiger, I would think that Radar would be overkill for a 22 footer, unless you are out at night a lot or in the fog a lot. if you confine your boating to clear daylight hours, radar is not essential. Is it worth it for those days when the fog rolls in? Well I think it better to keep an eye on the weather and run home on those days. However, if you go 20 miles offshore and the fog rolls in, radar would be a plus.

BTW - you do need a good GPS unit, whether or not you have radar. It would not be good if you hit a rock at night or in the fog. Radar won't help you on shoals and low rocks....

ok , i ran out and get a garmin Gps 172c i hope that is good enuff going to install it now .

Are you aware that is a discontinued product? It does not mean it wont work, but finding accessories might be difficult. Maps are compatible with other non-discontinued units so you should be good there.

I have the Garmin 172C, bought it a few years ago and would recommend it. There seems to be a little moisture inside and lately there's a little condensation on the screen that dissappears after it's been turned on a while. But other than that it works fine. I wouldn't rely on it for fog though, as mentioned earlier a GPS doesn't show you where other vessels are.

Another thing to consider is that the electronic maps on you use with this unit are not updated should be used accordingly.
