Okay, finally got my boat on the water, and its shooting 2 wicked rooster tails..

Someone mentioned that the motor might be too low? Where is the best way to start to troubleshoot this?

How high or low is it?

Where is your cavation/ ventilation plate relative to the bottom of the hull?

Can you post a pic of the back of your boat?

Re: Raising an outboard?

just sold one. you cannot get as high with that motor, as you can with a newer one. you have to stay deep enough, for the water pump to pick up water, at all speeds.

Any other options to combat these rooster tails?

Re: Raising an outboard?

If you can't get it high enough and still get cooling water you can use a transom mounted water pickup.

That's real good thing to know though, with that old motor your probably going to become friends with some people on here.

Man this forum is cool!

When you get a chance post them pics and we'll figure it out.

Re: Raising an outboard?

Actually, you can go relatively high on that as it has the water pick-ups on the sides of the gearcase, not on the underside of the AV plate like earlier models. Basically, with that foot and hull style, you can go as high as your prop will allow, .ie until it either ventilates or won't plane off. Go incrementally, say 1/8-inch at a time using rev sticks made from either paint mixing sticks (do they still give those away at the hardware stores?) or a wooden yardstick cut up into sections wide enough to slide under the clamps.

Re: Raising an outboard?

Are you getting rooster tails off both sides of the boat? I ask, because that transducer there is a likely cause of the rooster tail on that side, at least.

I agree, that transducer looks really low, i had mine low before i fixed it and had a small rooster tail on that side. When i moved it up and installed it correctly the problem was gone.

It shoots from both sides. The one on the (picture) right is a little harder to see in this pic, but it is on both sides.

I will try raising the transducer though. How high up should I go with it?

Re: Raising an outboard?

Do you run it down against the back of the boat like that or a few notches back?

Does the spray bother anything at all or are you just wanting to get rid of it for cosmetics?

It is through the first notch, all the way back. I also had it in the 2nd notch, no difference.

Part cosmetics, part wanting to make sure I am getting optimum performance. It also sprays us a little if the wind blows just right...

Re: Raising an outboard?

According to the installation instructions with my new fish finder the sender is suppose to be even with the bottom of the stern and slight rear down. ( Might be different with other systems ) I'm sure you can have it higher but anything higher than trolling and the sender would be out of clean water and read incorrect. Mine sprays but at least i know it's still attached to the boat :)
The rear of the boat looks like it has small tunnel on each end of the boat. I believe this would give you those rooster tails. Might be wrong but it's just a observation.

Re: Raising an outboard?

So what you are saying is you think it is the design of the boat?!?!?
