I'm an OEM manual guy.

Does the Seloc manual say to whack the trim motor with a mallet for service?

Re: Rather Disappointing Maiden Voyage

So what about the releasing of the winch problem, I'm going to guess that the flipper lever lever wouldn't release because you weren't taking the tension off the spool?

My maiden voyage with my new to me I/O I could not get the boat to go into gear, someone on the dock came over and said try pushing the button on the shifter, daaaa, it was my first boat with a single lever control. Then just after pulling away from dock the motor stalled and while trying to get it started again something started smoking back by the motor, OH SHI*** ! battery cable positive had rubbed through the insulation against the motor block and caused direct short, pure adrenalin enabled to wiggle off the batter terminal.
It's funny how things can go so smooth at home yet turn to crap once your in the water.

Rip, this is a perfect boat. Since its been in the family and has been taken care of, then you know its not a hunk of junk. In fact, the boat and motor are probably very sound. Yeah there are a few gadgets and gizmos that need a little tinkering, but I really enjoy working on and messing around with boats. This is a perfect winter project. Do a little at a time, check out everything, and make everything as close to perfect as you can get it. Anything that sits around for a few years is going to need a little attention. You've probably got a winner here, have fun fixing it up! :)

I'm also surprised it ran on that crap 2 year old gas.

Look at the bright side. It didn't sink, start on fire or crash.:D

My fuel gauge indicated 3/4 tank. Not sure how long the thing sat. Since the filler goes straight into the tank, I checked with a tape measure before going to that lake.;)

Congrats on the new boat. Sorry the shake down cruise never went so well. It's a newer boat and I'm betting it's not got many hours on it and after you knock a little "ring rust" out of it you'll have a good boat. The gas gauge probably works so I'd leave it till you burn a little gas and see what happens. I picked up a fuel sending unit at princess auto for $22 and it works fine. I think that's the equivalent to your harbor freight store.I fixed the speedo on oops! bilgeliner and it was easy even though I never knew what I was doing. I took the hose off the speedo and the pitot tube and blew through it to make sure the hose was not kinked. I replaced the pitot and was able to blow through it but the gauge would not work. I used a compressor and blew through the hose to see if the gauge would move and thats were the problem was, but I noticed the gauge tried to move backwards. After I got it out and put air to it it was definitely trying to go the wrong direction, and with nothing to lose, I spun the needle counter clock wise a full turn and it settled back on the zero so I hit it with air again and it worked. If I got to much air pressure through the gauge it would go all the way around and past the zero. When It did that the next shot of air would make the gauge try and work in the opposite direction. Spun the gauge 360 counter clockwise again past the zero and it would work again. Put the gauge back in the boat, out to the lake with a gps and all is good. The gauge is accurate to within 1 mph. I hope it's that easy for you.

I am surprised noone has mentioned this already, You just need a bigger hammer!!!!:):).

None died and the boat did not sink, not a bad day of boating.

Assuming your wiring is good, you just may want to get that pump going and raise and lower the motor a bunch of times to see if it will run smoother. It may be fine but misbehaving from sitting. Your at the place to be for help. Ike

Re: Rather Disappointing Maiden Voyage

consider your fuel gauge as a mere estimate. Treat 1/4 like the "get gas" light on your car's dashboard. If you have an hour meter keep track of that.
Keep your tank full to beat the ethanol issue, and therefore top it off after use while on the trailer.
The old rule for fuel was 1/3 to get you there, 1/3 to return and 1/3 reserve.

I didn't see what engine you have but when I had to replace a PTT motor on a 70 OMC it was expensive b/c they had to take the engine off just to get to one of the screws. Thanks OMC for the design defect.

Welcome to boating with old boats. Keep reminding yourself of how much money you saved not buynig new.

Congrats on the purchase.

That sounds like a great first boat.

If I could find an 03 like that I would snap it up in an instant. All you issues seem pretty minor.

Yep, you're doomed, better sell now.

At minimum, them gauges are at least $500 a piece. Not counting installation!

And you ran outta gas? Gonna need a new gas impeller - another $1k.

I'll help you out - get it off your hands for $4k.

Nope, don't thank me, just trying to help a buddy out.

Jim

I'll one up jdlough. Depending on your location I'll take if off you hands for a lot closer to what you paid...or even a little more. I'm not joking.

I have been looking for an outboard powered Four Winns all summer. They made an excellent boat from 97 til 04. They made a 17 foot and an 18 foot boat. I would prefer an 18 footer but I would buy a 17 if the price was right.

You got a great deal at $6k. If the notion to sell it ever comes up...

Good luck.

Ya well i priced the power tilt motor. It is $171 here on iBoats. I did not bother to look at pump parts.

My dad has an RV. They are as bad as boats. I have been giving him crap for years on the money he has dumped into it. I have a feeling I am due for some serious payback.

I have a boat and an RV. Oh and the wife bought me a British car for valentines last year. Any money pit question, I'm your man.

Seriously, I made my first run on the Winner 1850 CC I just bought, traded up from the jon boat. Speedo didn't work because there was none. Boat had 2 gauges fuel and trim. I forgot one plug (boat has 3) so the rear below deck storage flooded. Trim switch was baackwards so that made for a few exciting moments. For a final act I hit the floating dock a bit hard and knocked a fisherman off his stool.

I know this may sound stupid, but when you filled the tank you added oil to your gas or injector pump?

This applies if it's a 2 stroke. Don't run it without oil in the gas if it's a 2 stroke.

Sorry, I had to say it!

That's not so bad.
It was a sea trial for a boat that sat for two years... could have been worse. Bonus: the fixes will be cheap, the real meat of the boat is good-to-go.

You made the right decision, except maybe I would have left the wife at home for the first time out.

Now you have something to tinker with over the winter, and a kick-arse boat come spring!

Yea definitely leave the wife at home when you are unsure the boat will run right. No sense hearing I told you so 100 times. Or I should have married Billy with the brand new Yacht when I had a chance. Or you would be better off Captaining a bath tub boat blah blah blah :D
The Hammer is my favorite what the hail I am doomed anyway tool too haha.
My Speedometer doesn't work either. I just look at the tachometer. My gas gauge works but I top it off before going out every time just in case. YOu don't want to be worrying about gas
