Ratings on trailer tires

I ran across this subject a couple of years ago but forgot the answer.

I bought new 6 ply 14" rim tires for my trailer and they were "trailer only" rated. Why is that? Is that better or worse than P or LT ratings as tire quality goes?

Now you did it Mark, this will be about as much fun as an oil thread.

Trailer tires are only rated to 65mph, and are not designed to be used in a "steering" aplication.

It is perfectly acceptable, and safe to use P and LT tires on a trailer, as long as you satisfy your capacity requirements. However, you cannot use trailer tires on any motor vehicle.

ST Special Trailer tires are not better or worst than P or LT tires.
They are Trailer Tires and have stiffer side walls to help with sway control.
You will find a lot more tires that are 6 ply and can be inflated to 50 pounds.
Not many P tires go above a 35 pound rating.
A lot of LT tires do go to 50 pounds and can carry the load but the side wall have more flex.
I feel if you are going to use it on a trailer then get trailer tires.
I think all trailer tires will have their load range on the side of the tire.
My trailer has ST 205/75R 14 tires load range C 1760 pounds.
I perfer the Radial tires over the Bias Ply but many do not.

I was curious too! Glad you got it out... since I hadn't gone looking for the topic yet.

My trailer has P tires, passenger, so I assumed they were the wrong kind and we would have to replace them.

Now I know better.
