Re: RD-23 40HP HELP NEEDED
Hey Snapper. The reverse lock is in the front just under the cowl .. a little lever-like piece that you can push down an inch or so ... keeps your motor locked down so the engine doesn't jump up when you are in reverse. If you have been tilting the motor up, but not locking this lever, you likely don't have it locked.

Feels like a likely candidate.

If the boat is out of the water, and the reverse lock is locked, pull up on the lower unit as if you are trying to trailer the motor. It shouldn't move more than just a "jiggle". If it does, see what's moving. Maybe your reverse lock is broken.

If, however, you've been able to back up without your motor popping up, tell us more about the "kick". Does the motor jump or move? If this boat is new to you, is the motor bolted to the transom, or just clamped? Believe it or not, I've seen some of these old ones just clamped on, and they just didn't clamp tight .. they can jump a bit in reverse. Check your transom .. a bit scary, but if the boat is old, and new to you, make sure it's good and solid.

If it's just a scary noise, then we're thinking about other lower unit stuff.

Let us know ...

EDIT: Dang .. you guys are fast.
