Do you have the reverse lock on when this happens?

Is it a repetative kick, like are banging into things or just when you put it in gear?

Have you got the engine set up with remotes? If so, have you tried shifting the engine with the remote off?

PS - It's hard to read posts typed in all caps, and considered rude by some people. If you don't mind.

Look for the reverse lock. It is used to keep the motor from "climbing out" of the water when in reverse because the prop is trying to pull the boat rather than push it.

Right between the transom clamps there's a little lever. When the engine is down and you plan to use reverse & don't plan to hit things, you should lock it down with the lever.

Well, I really can't see or feel it so I can't be sure if what you're describing is normal or not. Picture it from my perspective - you're telling me it kicks, and that's all the information I have. I think I would have to say no, but these outboards don't ease into gear like a car with a clutch; either the prop is spinning or it isn't.

If the outboard is moving at all when you put it in reverse, something's wrong. If you're not locking the engine down it will move & kick out when you put it in reverse.

Couple of far out things come to mind. Is your idling too high. This wouldn't cause the kick, but might accentuate any shifting.

Second, do you know the history of this motor? Sometimes the shift dog will get worn and cause a kick when in forward. On some motors, it can be turned around which would move the "kick" to shifting into reverse. In other words, if you don't know the history, someone may have turned it around before you got it.

Hey Snapper. The reverse lock is in the front just under the cowl .. a little lever-like piece that you can push down an inch or so ... keeps your motor locked down so the engine doesn't jump up when you are in reverse. If you have been tilting the motor up, but not locking this lever, you likely don't have it locked.

Feels like a likely candidate.

If the boat is out of the water, and the reverse lock is locked, pull up on the lower unit as if you are trying to trailer the motor. It shouldn't move more than just a "jiggle". If it does, see what's moving. Maybe your reverse lock is broken.

If, however, you've been able to back up without your motor popping up, tell us more about the "kick". Does the motor jump or move? If this boat is new to you, is the motor bolted to the transom, or just clamped? Believe it or not, I've seen some of these old ones just clamped on, and they just didn't clamp tight .. they can jump a bit in reverse. Check your transom .. a bit scary, but if the boat is old, and new to you, make sure it's good and solid.

If it's just a scary noise, then we're thinking about other lower unit stuff.

Let us know ...

EDIT: Dang .. you guys are fast. Four posts posted while I was typing!
