My buddy swears by the sikkens but I decided to go with teak gaurd formula. I think sikkens looks too dark. I like the rich honey color instead. All that I know is that sikkens sucks too remove. Anyway , I started applying the teak gaurd to a couple pieces and it looks great!

I just refinished my teak, used Sikkens Natural Teak. I love how it turned out! Only about 30 minutes of sanding! Never used it before, so I'm not sure how long this finish will last.. Hopefully more than a month or two.

It turned out nice. It should last you alot longer than just using teak oil. I'm glad I didn't have louvers to sand on my doors. Looks like it was a pain!

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Im in the process of redoing the teak on my boat. The previous owner used Sikkens sealer. It looks ok but its to dark.. I've heard good reviews on "teak-gaurd"
Anybody have any suggestions? Tips?

I started doing my teak with Teak Guard a piece at at a time last February. After a year the 5 peices I've done look exactly as they did right after the finish dried last year. I'll add another coat to the pieces I did last year and hope to get more pieces done this month. I picked the Teak Guard because of the ease of maintenance they claim... which so far seems to be true if applied correctly. My Teak is 33 years old and was cleaned and re-oiled religiosly by the previous owner. I am somewhat lazy compared to him... actually I just have less spare time on my hands, so I did a lot of research to find something more mainenance free. I even considered replacing the teak strips on the bow with strips of stainless steel or anodized aluminum, but that would be too hot to walk on with bare feet.

:DAs of today I have 75% of my teak refinished. So far so good. This teak gaurd formula works really well. Here is a picture of the small cuddy cabin doors. I will post the rest in another week.

Sherm,

Very nice work my friend. I for one was very interested in seeing how the teak came out using the teak guard. Thanks for following up and posting the pics.

Sorry , I've been a little slow at getting more pictures up. Seems like I have no time! Everything is done but for 5 or 6 pieces. I'm extremely happy the way everything has turned out! Here is a picture of the large cuddy doors. Now its time too put the boat back together. I will post some more pictures with it installed soon.

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Nice job on all, I have some Teak that I will have to restore and was looking on here for ways to do it. So far I ordered the Marine Tex Te-Ka 2 part cleaner and now seeing this thread wonder if I am going about this right. I have small strips on the bow and the swim deck to do on my boat which seems easy enough, but my steering wheel is also teak. That is where I am wonder if I need to Spar the wheel, seems like so many ideas to get a good result, I would like to be able to make all the teak look the same and would rather oil but not sure if that is what I am suppose to do on the wheel. Maybe it doesn't matter. Any ideas, am I going about this wrong?

Once I start maybe I will start a new thread with my results and idea's. I hate hi-jacking a thread.

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Theres nothing wrong with using a good teak oil but after a month it starts to fade out & get mildew spots on it. Depending on if you have alot of teak and all the time in the world and like to keep reoiling the wood then go for it but in my case I decided to spend the extra time up front but in the long run this will last alot longer and its easy if I want to touch it up..& teak gaurd creates a barrier to mildew. Call Martin @ teak gaurd and he can help you out with what to do with the steering wheel( 800-265-6074 ). If you go with the teak gaurd and great tip from me to you would be to remove the pieces off the boat. Its alot easier!

Ya the boat is being gone through and the wheel will come off as I am changing the dash a tad anyway. But I wanted to keep the wheel and not just replace it with another. The stuff I bought today was just a cleaner. it was what i wanted to do next that I was wondering about. I like the idea of a longer laasting product, thanks.

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Wow that came out very nice!! I love the natural clean look it gave.

I'm in the process of redoing mine, but went with Sikkens Cetol. I think the PO of your boat used the older stuff. The new "natural" isn't very dark, and gives a medium bright color. I wanted that high gloss look, and very low maintenance.

Get some photos with it outside in the boat. It looks 100 times better on the boat, and really wakes it up.

The sikkens is ok but it sucks if you want to remove it. Thats what I wound up doing.
Icyharp..if you go with teal gaurd buy the kit..it comes with everything you need to do the complete job. brushes, bronze wool, super cleaner and the teak gaurd and its only $35.

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

As far as my project goes, I installed most of my teak trim today but have to make some adjustments on the door hindges. Doesn't seem to fit like it did. I'll get it right. ran out of day light to take some good pictures but will post some very soon.
