On the way back from the store, sitting at a red light and bam. Hit by a 1990? buick something. Guess what no insurance. Feel like suing the city for giving these people a license plate when they have no insurance.

Your uninsured motorist part of your insurance should cover it. Also because driving without insurance is against the law DEMAND THAT THE INVESTIGATING OFFICIER CHARGE THEM WITH THIS..often they dont. Make an issue of this.

The city of Dallas has an ordinance that if you get in a wreck with no insurance, your car gets towed. You must show proof of insurance and pay for the tow to get it back. There was an attempt to change the ordinance to where if you didnt have insurance for traffic stops, your car would get towed.

It was shot down as discriminatory, because the poor and illegals cant afford ilnsurance. Go figure.

In Kentucky, no insurance, no plates.
Get caught with non, big fine and must show proof of insurance at court.

up here in canada .... no insurance....no drive...

its against the law....$400-800 dollar fine...the car is immeadatly towed and impounded. bam....yer off the road... no iffs ands or buts.......

we have stickers on our plates that say when the insurance expires....cops are really good at spotting expired stickers


i got lucky once... insurance had run out, i didnt notice....3 days over....the cops got me in vancouver just as my girl and i were on our way to the airport for a mexican vacation.......there was an insurance agency a block away.....the cop waited with his lights on while i ran and renued my insurance....

btw....in canada...even a boat trailer has to have insurance, or you cant use it ! and they will get you every time...

Us here in the state of Wisconsin you are not required to have insurance. If you get in an accident you will pay big time with required insurance and an SR-22 State Filing. There are only about 5 companies that handle these and plan to pay hefty for it.


Now in Minnesota & Iowa you are required to show proof if you are pulled over even for a speeding ticket (or Tint on your windows....) I feel it should be required but, Thats a politic subject and cant talk about that....

Florida requires insurance for license plate, and you must show proof anytime you are asked.

My insurance will cover the damage, but it seems that the ones playing by the rules get stuck holding the bill.

The lady got a citation and drove off.

In all the years I gone to the BMV they have never once check to see if the insurance number I give them is real.

Getting a citation isnt the same as being arrested. I would sign a warrant if needed and have the person arrested.

In Lousiana, you can't even get an inspection sticker w/o proof of insurance. If you get caught driving w/o it, your plate (we only have one) is taken. Our insurance companies are also required to notify the state if our insurance is cancelled due to non-payment.

They may have had insurance when the got the plates. No where does it say anyone comes and gets your plates if you don't keep the insurance.

Feel like suing the city

Why sue the city, they didn't arse end you! Sue the idiot witout insurance, you stand a better chance of damage recovery.

Sue the hell out of that person. Attach large punitive damages as well just to give the judge the option to make this person pay even more.

If you don't, then you're only proving to these people, and other people, that crime DOES pay, and thus they should commit that crime.

If I want to insure my car, then I'll insure it......

Thank heavens none of you live in Michigan. Here the laws are all screwed up. I know plenty of people who get insurance just to get their plates and then cancel it. And yes here you are allowed to sue them, but for the most part due to torte (spelling?) laws they are limited to $500. It is a joke. I got into an accident about 5 years ago with a lady who hit me. She waited almost a year then filed claim for $50,000. Saying that I totaled her car and she had lost her job due to neck trauma. At the scene she refused help from the paramedics, the police, or the fire department and she made the statement to myself, my wife, and the police officer that she was a single mom and had just dropped her insurance on her car due to the cost. So she was looking for a payday and I was the target. My insurance carrier gave her $500 per the law and she was embarrased in the court room.

I find that a big fat tow hitch protects my car when it is rear ended and it supplies instant punishment to the rear ender...

Welcome to the real world. The honest and legal person always gets screwed or has to fight just to get the laws enforce. We see that in the Illegal Immigration issue now. We have laws, it's just special interest doesn't want them and fights them being enforced.

Wait until you get hit by an uninsured boater. It's even worse. There are some good thoughts and posts here in this thread.

I too live in Michigan and the Insurance Companies by law are required to report to the Secretary of State anyone who drops their Insurance or are canceled. The only problem is, many cases fall through the cracks and there are not enough police officers to Investigate or enforce the law. Furthermore if the vehicle is financed the Insurance company is suppose to contact the lending institution. There are no Insurance laws covering boats in Michigan.

We were once rear-ended by an uninsured driver.

Our insurance company paid us on the "uninsured motorist" part of our policy, then immediately sued the other driver, which is standard procedure, at least in CA.

Our agent stated, that the driver will have certainly wished he had paid his premiums!
