Refinishing oiled teak with a varnish?

My boat has a lot of teak cabinetry and trim, both interior and exterior, which is looking pretty weathered. It has previously been oiled but I'm wondering whether it would now be possible to somehow re-do it with some sort of varnish (using the very generic term:) such as these new aliphatic coatings? I simply don't like grey teak, and I certainly don't like the regular maintenance that goes with preventing the grey.

Failing that, what is the most durable / long lasting oil finish available?

Cheers

Thanks for the link. That's food for thought but my main concern was whether I could get anything to stick to old, oiled teak? There's a lot of it and I don't have the spare time to do a lot of sanding etc.

Cheers

If you wash it down with Acetone, it will remove all the oil from the wood and allow whatever you want to put on it to adhere properly.

So wh?t does everyone recommend as being the most durable oil system finish? Good ol' teak oil seems to only last a few months, especially when its applied to a high traffic load surface such as a work bench surface. Are these silicone based oils as good as they claim?

What are you trying to accomplish and for what sections of the boat. Different applications for different places where the Teak is used and located.

Re: Refinishing oiled teak with a varnish?

Sorry its not the greatest photo but I'm away with work at the moment and this is the only one i have on my iPad which kinda shows some of the woodwork in my boat.
The main area I want to refinish is the locker which goes the full width across the back of the transom, just visible behind my seat. It has had quicksilver teak oil applied to it during its life but none for the past twelve years that it was in storage before I bought it. The woodwork now has a rather unsightly coating on it which to me first appeared to be perished varnish (slightly glossy and a definite coating / buildup). This would become sticky when damp and turn blotchy and rub off when wet. Ugly.
The main access to the boat is by stepping up onto the top of that locker from the swim platform so it does see more traffic than the rest of the woodwork, and the fishbin is located under the centre section, so getting fish blood, bait guts etc splattered over it is hard to avoid. For these reasons I would like to refinish it in a durable, easy to clean and maintain coating. I was leaning towards a satin finish aliphatic varnish but then this would not match the rest of the woodwork through the boat, and there's lots of it!
So, I guess what I'm after is a teak oil looking finish that lasts better than teak oil :) What about the Semco products?

Cheers
