Re: Removing 130 hp ocean runner from boat

We have a HF here in town, going for the scaler. I can see all kinds of other uses for that thing anyway, lawnmower deck comes to mind, welding slag removal.... Anyone got a line on good quality rust nuetralizer/converter. When I was a kid I remember a friends father who rebiult old Ford Broncos. He had a product he painted with a brush onto the frames of his trucks to convert/seal the rust, no sandblasting. Material went on green and dried black, then painted with a frame paint.

Plan on using some white heavy equipment single stage acrylic enamel w/hardener (not oil base from tractor supply) that happens to match my motor for topcoat??

Will descale if I can get tool this weekend and post some pics.

Rust converter can be found at any auto parts store. I think we have permatex sitting on the shelf - but I've used a "mongrel" brand that worked similar.

Use 2 coats and you'll likely be putting in on with a shop rag and index finger to get to all surfaces.

If you have some eastwood rust encapsulator, a few coats of that. Epoxy primer rattle can may be available at your auto parts store(epoxy sticks and seals like crazy). I think there's Por-15 that some people like.

Many ways to skin the cat, once you get the scale off and rust reasonably neutralized.

Don't torture yourself too much, this isn't a lifetime repair, but it will put you in the driver's seat, so the part outlasts the motor with generally cosmetic touch ups along the way.

Other are certainly welcome to chime in here as many of them also do body work.

DazK14, the miniscaler was the ticket. If that thing dies tomorrow it owes me nothing. I will post raw pics on Monday, but feel pretty confident there is plenty of steel left. Found the permatex rust neutralizer, got a PPG dealer for the epoxy primer, and topcoat leftover from previous project. Thanks very much to those who suggested I hold up on the idea of removing the engine as a first step.

A few coats of epoxy (which sticks like crazy) helps to really seal it and flows out some of the craters a bit.

Did you pull a side cowl?

Yes, pulled the all the cowling off to get to as much of the surface as possible. Cleaned everything with degreaser and finished wiped with laquer thinner before applying two coats permatex neutralizer. Looks like done for this week, had a beautiful 70 degree afternoon, but now temps heading to the 30s in advance of a snowstorm. Not gonna see above freezing for a few days here.

Nicely documented. You'll make someone's day in the future, when they think they're facing $$$$ R&R the steering arm.

Now put on your rubber gloves and a cut down rag and get the rust treatment on it.

Steering arm painted and sealed. Probably as long as I keep up with it and repeat each year it may last as long as the motor.

I see some over-spray so I'm afraid I'm going to have to reject it.lol

Looks great! That will far outlast the motor and certainly outlast me.

Did you use a 2 part epoxy primer?

FYI - for others that don't have spray equipment, after you hit it with rust converter, you can buy a 2 part epoxy (great for sealing, incl rust) in a rattle can "spraymax 2K" for about $24. Once the catalyst is released, it does become a one time use. You can get plenty of coats if you want.

You can also use $5 rustoleum, etc.., but it won't last as long.

Yes, I used the two part epoxy primer and my spray gun setup with 1.7mm tip. $40 for a quart and the catalyst from PPG Omni line and only catalyzed what was needed. You can get spray units that use canned air if you do not have a spray setup if you want to go this route then you have unmixed product for later use. Topcoat is some nason industrial equipment enamel with hardener left over from another project, just happens to match Johnson white close enough.... After a few days I would recommend going back with some more mixed topcoat and small model brush to get small places you cannot get adequate spray on.
