Removing bearing carrier from Merc 9.9

I need to remove the bearing carrier from my Merc 9.9 in order to replace the seals. The manual says that a special tool is required to remove the carrier, but if the tool is not available it states that you can use the thrust hub as a removal tool by placing it on the prop backwards, with the hex end of the thrust hub now exposed, and the hex end of the hub will fit a conventional box wrench, thereby becoming the removal tool. But I have done this -- placed the hub on the prop shaft backwards (as it says to do) and the hex end is exposed... but now what? If you put a box wrench on this hex end and turn it, it just turns the prop shaft. It is not clear to me how the reversed thrust hub is used to remove the bearing carrier. What am I missing?

The early 9.9 had a forward prop hub that you removed a S/S plate and could use the hub to unscrew the carrier, the newer engines do not so if yours is a newer engine you must buy a spanner or make one out of pipe

Laddies --- My 9.9 is a 1987, so not sure if that is 'early', but I believe it is(?) I removed the forward prop hub but is is not clear to me exactly how that hub is used to unscrew the carrier. Where do I place that hub to do the 'unscrewing'?

If there is a s/s plate on it remove the plate then you should have a hex nut on the back where the plate was there should be 3 flanges that fit into 3 notches on the front of the carrier with it in place use a wrench to loosen the carrier if you don't have this arrangement you will have to get a spanner

You should see the 3 notches if you have that type of carrier. The carrier is LEFT HAND threaded so turn it clockwise to loosen it.
