removing flywheel V4

I have a 1997 90 hp that has a tapping coming from under the flywheel. and i went and bought a book today and stopped by the mechanics to ask a few questions before i dive in.

he says dont try and take it off, it is hard to do and that I 'll chew up my fingers trying to get it off.

plus i need a special tool, and the factory says you need to discard the bolts and use new ones!!!

now after knowing this guy for a few years I know he crys wolf on most things...

because the truth not everyone is cut out for working on outboards..and he probably has seen his share of them come to him in pieces to put back together for a guy that got in over his head.

so is it a BIG deal trying to remove the flywheel from a 90HP 60 degree v4?

also when i am removing all the pieces to get to the flywheel is there any tiops to help make sure it all goes back together in the same timing...because the motor runs now!!

thanks

Re: removing flywheel V4

The special tool, other then the puller is a tool that attaches to the flywheel to reinstall, the flywheel sets below the top of the engine housing. The tips of your fingers are in DANGER without this tool or 2 long bolts used as a handle, you should be able see the tapped holes.

This is optical ignition, so if it were me, I would make absolutely sure I could check/verify the timing after you put it back together.
Tricky if you don't have the right tools or test equipment.

this is the kind of stuff that scares me...i can deal with all things mechanical...no problems..

its the electrical stuff..i am blind about.. and the sophisticated electrical stuff is really troublesome to me....

the motor runs good...but has that tapping...I dont think it is bad...but like most guys say..it is not supposed to be there, so something isnt right.

so i want to check...but i dont want to take two giant steps backwards.

if i put witness and line up marks on everything..will that be good enough for reintallation???

or do i need electrical equipment to set things all over again??

thanks

Re: removing flywheel V4

I just read thru the flywheel removal instructions. Quite an involved process.
The last paragraph states that you must perform a complete link and sync once the re-assembly is complete.
I do not know about the success you may have using the witness mark method....
The special tool that is required is an electrical test box for setting the timing on OIS systems. It is called an OMC Ignition Analyzer. CDI Electronics makes a powerpack that is electrically different from the original powerpack. If you have one of those new CDI units...hopefully...you can do your timing without the OIS Ignition Analyzer, by using a standard tiiming light.
The book also states that you must use 5 new flywheel bolts; do not re-use the old ones.
I will have to let the experts weigh in on any other gotchas that may be out there.
Good luck.

It's possible to check the timing with a traditional timing light with either the OE ignition or the CDI ignition. Using the box is much, much easier though. The CDI ignition is far superior to the OE.

Re: removing flywheel V4

I removed the flywheel recently on my 1995 150 with OIS. Use the harmonic balancer puller to remove it and to re-install it. It will allow you to slowly lower the flywheel without the magnets snapping it into place and chunks of your fingers too. I time mine with a regular timing light, you can do it at cranking speed too. Just follow the online directions.

The 5 flywheel bolts are not in a regular pattern so re-installation will only allow it to go on in the proper way. The OIS timing wheel is keyed so it only goes on one way. (I used the old bolts but they came out easily and have had no problems so far...)

I completely rebuilt my 150 and removed everything from the power head for machine work. It went together perfectly and started on he first try.

I think your mechanic is blowing smoke. These engines are easy for an un-trained DIYer to work on. Just make sure you have a manual and good typing skills for this board.

Good luck!!!

Re: removing flywheel V4

if I pull the flywheel and dont rotate anything...just look around...

is there some part of this dissasembly or assembly that still can get out of adjustment??

a few things are going through my mind.

I d love to try and figure the noise..

but the engine runs now

and it is a monster to wrestle onto a flatbed or into a truck bed to get to the mechanic to sort out if I get into trouble, and cant start again.

I may just wait till i have it mounted on my boat, that way I can run it to the shop easily for work.

No - The worst problem in taking off the flywheel is the timing linkages over the cover. Remove it as an assembly and dont take it completely apart and you should have no problems. (remeber I have a V6 model so your milage may vary)

Other than a brokem maganet there not much under there to "tap".

My guess the tap is internal to the powerhead. I scored a cylinder and had a tap. It was bearings. Hope you have better luck than me :)
