Re: removing motor and outdrive

I have duct rape in the boat already for emergency fixes. I know it will stay lol. You know Adam savage and Jamie heineman made a boat out of duct tape!

I don't know if the shift cable is original. If it is not terribly expensive I'll just replace it anyway.

Is this what I need, plus the u joints? There is another kit for 150 including the alignment tool. Is it worth it to buy the tool, or would it cost the same to have a boat shop do it?

If the shift cable is original, might want to consider it as well since you have to take it all apart anyway"

You mean the cable from the shifter to the drive, or is there a cable inside the drive unit?

I'm referring to the cable that goes from the drive to the shift plate on the engine. AKA the lower shift cable.

Get the OEM cable, only a few bux more than an aftermarket, but SOOOOO much better.

These are the shift cables?

Then the cable you are referring to goes from here to the drive, which is what I see in the small bellow.

Is this the same cable that was recommended may be helping cause my hard shift into neutral?

Yes, move the shifter and they should move.

Yes, those are your shift cables. The upper one goes to the helm Throttle/Shifter control unit, the lower one goes to the outdrive.

Sounds to me like there is 2 things that you need more than replies and video's, here are links to the OEM service manuals.
Might as well fix it right the first time, instead of the 2nd or 3rd tries.

Yeah I've been lazy getting the correct numbers off my motor so I can be pointed to a place to order a paper manual. I'd like a copy of the oem manual in paper, not a generic manual or a digital copy (although the digital copy is much appreciated and better than nothing!) My eyes hurt from all the reading and videos and pictures I've been viewing on my phone. A full sized page would be nice to look at.

Just a thought, Seldom do you need all the information found in the OEM manuals. Just print out the pages you need, put them in a binder and take them to the boat with you.

The manuals new are about 100 bux each, you can find them on ebay used and prices vary, but it's still more than your printer.

That's a thought. I'm sure I could borrow a printer and print up the pages pertaining to the outdrive and the work I'm doing right now.

Anyone know the SN of the drive manual for alpha one Gen one? I found a shop selling several for 35$, but I need to know the number to see if they have what I need. Googling it only gives me Gen 2 manuals.

It looks like some kinda star shaped bolt holding the y pipes on. Anyone know right offhand what it takes to get it off?

Those are some weird fasteners, aren't they? I tried all sorts of things... even bought a set of Torx sockets that didn't work. Eventually, I found some 12-point sockets at AutoZone that worked. I don't remember which size I used, but here is a picture of one of the sockets:

These did the trick. Hope this helps.

Ayuh,... It's just a 12-point bolt head that uses a standard 12-point socket, 3/8" I think...

Motor is out, everything is unhooked. I have the two bottom anode bolts out and 4 bolts out of the upper portion of the inner transom plate. Neither plate will budge. I just wanna be sure those six nuts are all that is holding it before I start doing some serious prying.

Its hard to see here, but one of the studs has a hunk rusted out of it. Also one of the screws rounded off, visible here. I'm afraid I'll have to drill them both out, something I've been fortunate to never have to do before. I'm gonna start soaking them in wd 40 in hopes I will help loosen them up.

I'm assuming that gasket around the whole outer assembly's inner surface has failed to allow this. Is there a set of studs and bolts I can order to replace these? And tips on getting these old weakened ones out?

I'm also trying to get prepared for when it all goes back together. What special tools are necessary for the gimbal bearing, and bellows? As well as any for replacing the water pump. I have studied the thread for the homemade exhaust bellows tool, but what about the other bellows? I have the engine alignment tool, it came with my gimbal/bellows/gaskets order.

Would that be called a transom plate gasket?

Re: removing motor and outdrive

Studs, 4-3/4" part # 16-56296
Screw, 4-1/4", part # 10-37268
Seal, housing to transom, part # -65533A1

Apart from the exhaust bellows expander tool (I made one of the 'homemade' jobbies and it works great) no other special tools, just patience and persistence....

HTH,

Chris....
