Re: removing motor and outdrive

Is an alpha one gen 2 outdrive (it has a "140" sticker on it) interchangeable with mine?

Studs, 4-3/4" part # 16-56296
Screw, 4-1/4", part # 10-37268
Seal, housing to transom, part # -65533A1

Apart from the exhaust bellows expander tool (I made one of the 'homemade' jobbies and it works great) no other special tools, just patience and persistence....

HTH,

Chris....

Thanks chris. The studs screw in, and are not driven in, correct? I have a friend with an old junk boat with a nice Gen II he's selling for cheap. I might be able to give him a little money and swap out drives if it will work.

Screw in, yes...

To swap to a gen II you are going to need EVERYTHING.. Trim pump, rams and lines, inner and outer transom plates and complete drive.

Hmmm. The last use of a '140' sticker on the drive was a LONG time before the Gen IIs.. By Gen II era the engine designator sticker was the engine capacity, like 3.0L, 4.3LX, 5.7EFI, ect....

If it has a '140' sticker on it, I suspect it's not a Gen II, but the other side of that coin is that the 140 ran a 1.98:1 ratio, and your V6 should be running a 1.84:1. You might get away with a larger pitch prop, depending on what you're currently running.... As the engine is in a 18'8" boat I suspect you are already running quite a large prop (pitch-wise) anyway, so you might not be able to get a larger one.

The way to work at what prop you are going to need is just multiple your current pitch by 1.1. So if you're current prop is 21", then you are going to need a 23"... If you are already running a 'standard' prop at 23", you will need to go to an 'exotic' prop, like a Laser II..

Re: removing motor and outdrive

My outdrive doesn't have the "140" sticker on it. That was on the junk boat my friend has. Looks just like a Gen two to me. My outdrive is certainly a Gen one alpha one.

I think I'm a little over propped at a 21. I get 38-40 MPH at 3600-3800 rpm. But I was also waterlogged and needing a Carb rebuild. I'm planning on going to a 17 pitch 4 blade if I get no change with the Carb work and restore shedding some weight.

I got that in the first post about the '140' sticker... Why does it look like a Gen II to you? Have you had a look at the sticky about the differences between an Alpha One and an Alpha One Gen II?

To refresh your memory..... (Thanks Don ;))

No, I'd say you are WAY overpropped.... A V6 should be turning 4400-4800 at WOT... Something's not adding up here... You have an 18'8" boat, light, open bow, with a shallow to medium Vee (I googled some images of you boat). I had a 1994 4.3 litre V6 (basically the same engine) in a heavy, deep Vee, cabin cruiser, and at WOT (4900 rpm) I was pulling 40 knots (46mph) turning 21". What drive ratio do you have?

I don't know what drive ratio I have. Once I get done with the rebuild I'm going to change plugs and dist cap and rebuild the Carb and try out a 19 pitch prop and see how she does. What do knots equate to in MPH?

Is this U-Joint for Volvo Penta 3850812, Mercruiser 75835T1 75832A3 75832T1 758321, OMC Sterndrive Cobra 915717, GLM 28030 - Sierra 18-2174 - iboats the correct u joint for my alpha one Gen one?

I'll take a picture of that 140 outdrive for you, I'm curious about it now.

Here is a link to my rebuild. I've surely shed some weight in this process.

If your drives are fine, i would just lightly sand and repaint them. Since your a regular now, have a look at what friscoboater did, in my case it was cheaper to clean up the current drive and i/o vs $ to buy a new used one with uncertain reliability..
Good luck on the rebuild! I'm just about finished mine and dreaming of the next one...its addictive.

BTW the studs in the gimbal housing have red loctite on them, or atleast the ones I saw have had it. They require heat to remove them. An oxy-acetylene torch with a small welding tip works well to get the heat where you need it and away from where you don't.

Re: removing motor and outdrive

Haha. I've put the other drive out of my head. It looks brand new though, but at any rate different from mine and I've already gathered most of the parts to freshenmine up. I'm just always hesitant about tearing into things and heading into uncharted territories. She's getting paint for sure before going back on the transom.

I'm probably about to sound like a dunce, but what can I install before the housings and outdrivbe go back on the boat? I have a new lower shift cable, gimbal bearing/seals water lines (came as a kit) bellows, u joint, and water pump. I know the water pump goes in while I have the drive off.

Other than that this is all new to me. I just received an OEM manual in the mail today woo!

Ayuh,.... Other than the water pump kit, the rest of that stuff is easier to install, After the transom housin' is remounted....

That way, yer not chasin' the housin' All over the shop...

Bolt it to the hull, 1st...

Re: removing motor and outdrive

I'm about to reinstall everything on my rebuilt boat. Finally! I wound up finding a good deal on a used outdrive in much better shape than mine while I had a little money in my pocket, so I took it! When I go to begin mounting everything back up I should first bolt the gimbal housing to the inner transom plate, correct?

What must I make sure I have run through there before I go much further? If I remember correctly, there are two lines for the trim system that go through there to the outdrive, and a water hose. It's been so long since I took it all apart, I hope between my pictures and the manual I can figure it all out without much fuss.

The gimbal housing is separated into its two pieces right now, by the way.

After bolting the outer transom plate on, is that when I fish the new shift cable through?

Ayuh,.... That's Correct,.... After that, things fall into place,...

The cable is done as the bellows, 'n all goes together,...

Re: removing motor and outdrive

Thank-you. I am trying to read through the procedures in the manual online now. It's hard to make heads or tail of, but I'm sure it's easier when you have the manual, and the parts, all in front of you together. I was a little alarmed when I read through section two on installing the transom assembly, as it didn't have anything about the bellows or installing the shift cable, only adjusting it. But now I see down in section four it covers shift cable installation in more detail.

Mercruiser Transom Seals - Sierra 18-2724 - iboats

This is the only mercruiser transom seal I see listed on iboats. It is for the gen II. Am I missing something, or will this work for my gen one as well?

I'm also trying to find replacement anode bolts. I'd like to get it all here on iboats. When I search for anode bolts I don't come up with much.

At the bottom left of the gimbal housing there is the anode that I need. I think maybe it is actually a bolt that sticks out from the inside of the boat, and the round part is a threaded cap, but mine rounded off inside the boat, and I need the bolt and anode cap. Not finding it anywhere though, and I don't see it in the manual yet.
