removing silicone caulk from fiberglass

working on the interior of the Rogue, removing the 31 year old carpeting from the insides of the gunwale compartments...... somewhere in the past some goober used a whole tube of silicone caulk to re-stick the port side carpet.

no problem with a wire brush where its on the inside of the non-finished floor as it will be covered back up. however the carpet also was glued down to the gel coated floor...

besides patience, a razor blade and time, anyone have any suggestions on something that will soften cured silicone from non-skid gel..... a cup brush in the angle grinder will damage the gel which is not my intent.

Acetone will cut it for you. After that a sharp flat metal scraper or multi-tool w/ attachment. . Good luck! Something like this.

decided to use a wood chissel. it took off the non-skid from the floor......guess I am re-geling the floor

Wife comes out and says.....I dont want carpet in there (meaning the gunwales), I want you to paint it.... so now I am going to be doing some glass work and fairing to the inside of the gunwales....

anyone know of a pre-mixed urethane filler with micro-balloons...... need to fair from 1" at the top to about 1/4" at bottom and I dont want to add weight. if not, going to pick up some urethane putty and micro-balloons and start fairing.

You can use 3M 46004 marine filler, its just premixed vinyl ester with glass bubbles....made for fairing under gel or paint. [h=1][/h]

this is the area that I will be fairing.... thinking of grabbing a few sections of door skin, from work (we use it as template for boat hull skin). then a layer of CSM on the back, put in position, and then 2 layers of CSM on the front then fair.

Ha yep, thats why I mix my own.....but it is real creamy and nice to work with.

I'm late to the party on this one, but here is what I found worked great for the exact same problem I had. I used a retractable safety scraper for scraping paint off of windows and it took it right off with zero scratches.

I've heard the totalboat polyester fairing compound works pretty well.. Never used it myself, but probably the best price you're gonna find unless you mix it yourself.

current plan is 1/8" thick door skin with a layer of CSM and a variety of fill holes for foam. low expansion urethane foam to fill the void between the door skin and outer hull.

then layer of CSM and light fairing

at $11 a sheet for door skin, cant go wrong. will be much lighter than fairing and a much cheaper as well.

Scott, Make your own. Just get some polyresin and mix some Q-Cells from USComposites. This will yield a creamy smooth filler that sands easily. If you want it to be a bit tougher ad a bit of cabosil to the mix. Mix at a .075% or 1% ratio and you'll get 30 mins working time
