Re: Removing throttle cable 1975 Johnson 85 HP

Please remember that I am a novice so most times I am guessing when drawing a conclusion. I understand your confusion trying to follow the logic of a novice :)

My concern for the cable length is that it would allow me to adjust? Really just a guess. Any other thoughts you may have - please I am wide open to ideas and areas I need to look at.

From what little I understand if I can work the linkage manually without a cable connection then that is good. That leaves two other options (I think): (1) the adjustment triunion nut was off and (2) a problem at the shift box. I don't see an issue at the shift box. All parts were connected and rotating as expected.

Upon further inspection of the throttle cable - I found the throttle cable inner wire was bent about 1 foot from the end on the engine side. It does not slide as freely through the sleeve as the shift cable for this reason. Don't know for sure but could this be a factor? I guess it is possible I damaged it during removal but I don't recall forcing it - once I got the second screw off on the engine side it popped right out.

The adjustment on the trunnion nuts is critical. I found that out the hard way.

When I moved my motor from one boat to another I just removed the throttle and shift cables at the motor without paying any attention to what I was doing. I just thought it was a simple disconnect/reconnect procedure. (everything looked so straight forward to me that it never even occured to me to look in the manual for the correct method)

When I reinstalled everything after moving the motor I didn't have any forward gear. Apparently I messed with the trunnion nuts when I was disconnecting or reconnecting and had messed up the adjustment.

After a post on here, I learned the correct way to adjust and after doing it everything was fine again. When you install your new cables you need to make sure you install all components correctly. They both adjust bascially the same way and that could well have been part of your throttle problem. You were definetely right in putting new cables on if the one looked bad though.

I will provide you with links to the posts that helped me if you need them in the future.

I think after you get the new cables on and adjusted correctly your problems will be solved and you may never actually know what the exact cause was...but the problem will be solved and that's all that matters.

By the way, other than my cold start problem, I really like my motor. Runs great after started. Haven't really got a chance to run it much yet because I just got it ready to go before winter hit but it really pushed the boat I put it on great. I have a feeling it's going to be a big gas hog though.

I think your motor and mine are identical except displacement and what is necessary with the cu.in. difference.

Good luck with the new cables.
