I have a 1974 115 horse Mercury 6cylinder outboard with a two piston tilt trim. The transom is soft. I am trying to remove the motor and hydraulic tilt trim so I can work on the transom. I have little experience but wanted to do this as challenge, but I do not want to break things on the removal. I am trying to figure out where the hydraulic tilt trim stops and the motor begins. I have been removing bolts and have undone the pistons for tilt trim. I have a small cable that is leading to the lower unit. Before I start to remove the 3/4 bolts on the lower unit where the cable is, I thought I might get some advice on what to not do. Any thoughts?

It is best to remove the T/T from the motor then completely from the boat, being you will need it off to work on the transom. Then remove the motor. When you want to put it back together just reverse the work and put the motor on first then the T/T unit. As for the small cable/strap, just remove it from the T/T and replace it when all done. JMO

You will need to disconnect the 4 hydraulic hoses. I recommend you d/c them at the pump, as the cylinders strip easily. I always found it a good idea to drop the gearcase to lighten the motor and make it less clumsy and top-heavy, before removing it. You will need somewhere to lean the powerhead and midsection.

Normally you want to use a Merc lifting eye threaded into the flywheel to lift the motor, along with a winch/cable hoist/block and tackle etc.

I see no advantage to removing the PTT cylinders from the motor.

I have a sealoc manual for 3 and 4 cylinders. I have a six cylinder 115 Merc outboard. My current manual does not have an exploded diagram of the tilt/trim and motor. Do have any links or other good manuals that I could obtain concerning a six cylinder? Again, I am trying to remove the motor first from the boat with it not being attached to the T/Trim.

When you remove the hoses, should I expect to lose a lot of hydraulic fluid? I have not done this before.
Also do you know of a link or manual for this six cylinder Merc outboard that would show an expoded diagram of the motor?

To verify the year of your engine, what is the s/n?

The correct manual for your engine, if it is a 1974 is P/N: 90-68647 (All Models, 1966 through 1974)

90-86134- covers s/ns 4590512 and above which is for 1977 and later engines.

In the interim here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual to help you get started. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived:

MERCURY - MERCURY IN-LINE SIX-CYLINDER MODELS (1969-1988).: Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home

If it is a 1974, here is the parts list:

MERC 1150 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

You will lose some hydraulic fluid. Put a baggie over each hose and secure with a rubberband. You will obviously need to bleed the PTT after your reinstall the motor.

The Crowleymarine website will have a picture of the PTT Pump Unit.

Rear Admiral,

This cite is in Swedish I think. Do you have one in English?

Re: Removing tilt trim and 115 Mercury outboard for a newbee.

I appreciate this forum! I will have the correct manual tomorrow. My dilema is the forward/reverse cable connected to the lower half of the lower unit. I am thinking that the best way to remove the motor totally from the boat is to remove the cable from the shifter in the forward part of the boat. That would mean tugging on the cable thru all the other cables for about 12 feet of cable. Or I could dismantle the lower unit where the shift cable is connected and keep the cable in the boat. I just worry about screwing up something. Hopefully the manual will provide a good direction with diagrams. Any thoughts?

Don't know what you are referring to about the shift cable and the LU.

The throttle and shift cables should enter the bottom cowl through boot, item 6 in this link from the parts list:

Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - BOTTOM COWL AND SHIFT LINKAGE - MERC 1150

The shift cable, you will see where it moves on bracket. item 24 in the same link. This is where you should disconnect the shift cable.

The throttle cable should be disconnected from lever, item 14 in this link:

Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - DISTRIBUTOR ADAPTOR AND VERTICAL LINKAGE - MERC 1150

Hope this picture comes through. It should explain what I am referring to.

Though your engine did not originally come with a speedometer system built into the LU, those pictures look like somebody has modified the LU to accommodate it. What happens when you squeeze that tube with your fingers? Does it collapse or is there something running inside?

Is this the one that runs forward to your remote (shifter) control box?

As well, are you saying that your cables from the remote control do not enter the engine, through the boot as described in the previous post?

It is very solid if you are referring the line. I followed this cable and it goes toward the front shift control. There are two other cables that enter midway up on the engine. I am sending a picture showing the entrance of the cables.
