I am about half attempted to float her to Florida.

I'm about half tempted to try to get invited along for that trip... lol should be a blast.

otherwise trailer rental sounds like a winner..... Good luck with your voyage either way

2 halves make a whole..... I have some time and a new engine would cost me the same as a new trailer.. and give me more security. Thinking I would be safer in a boat at 15kts than 70mph if something were to go wrong. The boat is not my worry here, It' the sled pullung her and everyone else around me within trailer shot. At least another 3g's for fuel, dockage, quarters, incidentals, etc. One way or another the boat is getting moved to FL starting around 8/10/10. This is important to me and the PO's family.

Re: repair suggestions needed

I called at least 12 welders in the area and they are either out of business or never returned my calls after they said they would inspect. Tells me 2 things, the economy is bad there and trailer is worse than the PO family thinks. I have given up on repairing and am looking for one in the area. I have beat cancer, traveled in storms with waves at 20 feet, got shot in Haiti, girlfriend missed period, served my country, but nothing compares to the thought of a trailer giving out on me at 70mph. I am worried about others around me if this should happen. Trailering anything over 18' is new to me. Is there a clear advantage of belted tires over radials? Once the boat is here she will be kept on a lift or at the dock. The trailer is for bottom maint. and hurricanes.

Re: repair suggestions needed

Will be leaving FL soon to pick up a 4000lb boat on a duel axle trailer which is in NJ. The PO has informed me a crack has developed on a weight bearing section of the trailer made of galvinized alum. I would like to have the trailer looked at by a remote welder. The trailer isn't going anywhere as it sits. I must locate a person in the area to fix this. Any suggestions on how to locate one, and also is it advisable to repair. Thanks.

You can go online and find a welder. You should also have someone check out the rest of the trailer including the wheel bearings. If the owner let it crack and didn't fix it it sounds like he didn't take care of things and a wheel bearing problem on the highway is not a good thing.

But it appears to be worse than a mere crack.
I circled an area on the frame in red for review.
I suspect this area is punky and if you were to tighten those u-bolts, the frame tube would crush.
Heck, I bet a swing at the same area with the pointy end of a welders chip hammer would go right thru with not much effort.

sasto,
You might check with your local boat retailers and/or boat manufacterers that might be delivering boats north. Or they might have an up-north dealer coming down to pickup a boat and are coming down with an empty trailer of which you could hire to haul that PennYan south.

That's a good thought. I wouldn't mind hiring somebody to bring her down. I am headed up that way next week for some work and decided to incorporate bringing the boat back. I could rent a new trailer here and bring her back. But I don't want to drag it along with me till I get there. I have a good tow vehicle for this size. Maybe not what I need, but this boat is important to me.
