Replace Fuel Pickup

I have a 1991 Hydra Sports 2000 CC and had to get towed in this past weekend after some fuel-related problems about 30 miles offshore. I am replacing the fuel system from the tank to the engine as a preventative maintenance spawned by a bigger problem. I cannot prime the engine. I disconnected the fuel line at the tank and can feel and hear air moving through the line when priming. So I think that my problem is inside the tank.

I have found very little information on replaceing fuel-pickups or purchasing replacement parts. I am considering buying parts and pieces at the hardware and automotive stores and building them myself. they dont look too complicated. I have 3/8" fuel line that feeds a 97 Johnson 175 with an inline fuel/water separator. I am considering using top-end 3/8" fuel injector hosing as the fuel-pickups inside the tank. Cut them to a length of approx 1" off the bottom of the 80 gal tank. Secure with hose clamps. Thanks in advance for any and all help and ideas. Mike

Re: Replace Fuel Pickup

Check the connection where the pickup attaches; I had a fitting crack just above where the pickup attachs and that caused my problem of not being able to prime the engine. Good luck.

Re: Replace Fuel Pickup

Thanks Will Bark. I will definately check that, but if I go to that much troucle to get into this tank, then I want to replace the entire fuel pick-up. Hoses, connections, filters and all. That is a very likely problem though. The boat was running fine and then at the most opportune moment, it just seemed that I ran out of gas. The tank was topped off prior to heading out, so I am estimating that there is still about 3/4 of an 80 gal tank worth of fuel in there, but cant get it out of the tank and into the carbs.

One of my questions was what to use for the pickup inside the tank. A motorhead buddy advised me that there is nothing better than fuel injection hosing. It will be a p.i.a. to get to, but the way it is assembled now, the current pickup wont unscrew at the connection and slide out the top. So either way, i have to get inside the tank to fix this. .
