I'm working on fixing up a motor (1969 merc 200) and I'm wondering what I should do with the fuel pump. On the previous motor just like this one that I worked on a had to replace the diaphragm because there was a hole in it. I'm worried this one will have the same problem.

Is this something I can take apart inspect and put back together if its in good shape or do I have to replace the gaskets/diaphragm no matter what if I take it apart?

Should I just leave the fuel alone for now even though it sat for a long time (not sure how long)? Is there a good way to test the fuel pump without disassembly?

I have no problems replacing the gaskets/diaphragm its just that they are hard to find. Last time I found a kit on ebay for like 8 bucks but now I can't seem to find one.

OK, I have another question. On my original motor (1968 merc 200) I dont have part 7 in the parts diagram. In the new motor I'm working on (1969 Merc 200) I do seem to have that part. Whats the deal with that. My original worked (for the most part until I broke it:eek:)

Part 7 is the fuel pump kit. Since the motor has sat for a long time you should rebuilt the pump as rubber can dryrot over time.

Haha! Funny you should comment. The reason I'm working on a second motor is because the impeller failed on the first! I got a new one ready to install.

I'm going to clean and rebuilt the carb tonight, I'll order the new fuel pump kit. I was hoping to get it done by this weekend but I don't know if that will happen. I could take the fuel pump of the blown motor, I know that one is good. Maybe I'll do that.
