Replaced starting rope, now no spark...

I recently replaced the starting rope on my 1979 Clinton 7.5 HP and after I replaced I am not getting a spark on my plug. I even tried a new plug and it did not work. Any tips?
Thanks!

Be sure you haven't desturbed plug wire or other wires that may be exposed.
Did you have the flywheel off?Did you torque the nut correctly?

I suspect the plug lead has been either pulled out of the coil or is shorting to the flywheel or case. Check the resistance between the plug lead and ground with a meter, you should be able to measure the secondary coil resistance, approx 7-10 K. If you measure a low resistance (almost zero) it's shorted. If it's an open circuit (OL) then the plug wire has pulled out of the coil or the lead is open and will need replacement.

Hope this helps.

Well i have defintley found my problem. I took off the flywheel and saw that the wire that connects the spark plug to the coil was completley out of the coil(orange thing). Do I need to reset the timing now that I pulled the flywheel off?

you should be fine. That looks like a new coil which is a good thing. I would plug the wire back into the coil. Usually you use a little dielectric compound(vaceline) to keep the moisture out. Then clamp or tywrap the lead securely so it won't happen again. Put it back together and try it.

good luck, Mohawk

How do you clamp or tywrap the wire so it wont come out again?

also what should I torque my flywheel nut to?

Flywheel torque:: Aluminum,400 -450 in lbs., iron with steel insert 375-400,
w/o insert 180-200.I would think there is a spot where wire would normally
be clamped or secured.Wire must pass through the stator plate somewhere thats where I would look to secure.

I have no clue what mine is though...

It should be easy enough to tell if the flywheel is aluminum or steel. I suspect aluminum, just put a magnet to one of the fins on top.

Like Steelspike says, look for a spot near the point where the spark plug lead goes throuh the stator plate. There should be a spot where you can add a "C" type wire clamp and secure with a screw or at least a spot where you can get a tywrap around somthing secure.

You want to prevent the lead from pulling out of the coil as the stator plate moves back and forth.

Check flywheel over; aluminum is light not magnetic and won't have rust, iron is magnetic, heavy, may show rust, steel Bore insert should be visable.test with a little magnet don't get it near the flywheel magnets.

I have kinda semi glued those in before with liquid electrical tape. It held ok and would prevent it from coming out incase you really pulled on it. Just push the wire in first and brush the liquid around the outside.
