Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Thank you.
Any thoughts on how long to wait before paint?
Must the primer be fully cured?

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

I just put two coats of rustoleum professional gloss white on the drive
Shiny stuff! I think it's looking good. Much better than before.
I'll let this dry for 30 minutes or so then hit it again with another two coats about ten minutes apart.
I hope this lasts a while.

Looks like all my outdrive parts will not be here until monday....
I'll get a pic up when I get things back together.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Hey guys!
I'm attempting to remove the "helmet pin" from the upper housing. That thing is really stuck in there.
Do I have to remove it? I just slid the helmet over it when I removed things.
I have a new bushing for the helmet coming..but is there any need to remove the pin?

Also, I realized I painted my ring anode on the lower unit. I'm in freshwater only, will this matter? or do I need to remove it and clean off the paint?

yes, remove the pin. remove the two hex head bolts. Next, using 2, 1/4 inch std thread bolts screwed into the other two holes, jack the pin out of the helmet.

Yep - the paint will act like an insulator so you'll need to remove it.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Thanks Pirate...
this morning I removed the prop and got the paint off the anode. Cleaned/greased splines and reinstalled the prop.
That line cutter behind the prop was a real pain to get off of there....a little heat was the answer. Also bubble up the paint on the anode so it worked out! lol

Also, got the helmet pin removed using the jack screws as suggested. One side had a bolt busted in there so could only use one jack bolt....it worked fine tho.
Thanks for the help!!!

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

I took some pics of my reverse mechanism push rod...from all the pictures i see, its not supposed to be bent like it is.....
What do you guys think?
Parts should be here tomorrow and hopefully get drive resealed and installed after work tomorrow.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Hey guys,
My parts are finally here! Yay!
I noticed some sealant material between the upper and intermediate house...some type of black stuff in a very thin layer.

What do I need to use for this?

Hopefully get the drive back on the boat tonight!

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Thank you sir. Just spread a bead? or "paint" the surface with it?
Appeared to have been a film over the whole surface.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Thanks...
I got the drive hung back on the transom shield.
Napa was closed already and advance didn't have the permatex3.
Transmission will wait until tomorrow I guess.
Both bellows are on, seals and bushings on steering fork, suspension fork bushings, and have new orings for the upper unit.
I 'm assuming I have to realign things with the steering fork when I reinstall...any tips for that?
I'll read the manual tonight and see what it says...again.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

I picked up the aviation sealant to install the transmission this evening. How about the alignment of the steering fork? any tips for that?

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Alignment of steering fork? any help?
I got everything together and it appears I'm slightly off more to one side when cranking the drive over......
Also, I still don't understand why I had to remove the steering helmet pin....I put it on first and then the helmet. it went easier that way. hmmmmm

Really need some advice on the alignment of the drive....I realize I have to remove the helmet and drop the fork again but how can I assure its straight? I'm only off slightly but i'm sure i'll notice it on the water.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

I haven't removed the steering fork so can't advise on that other than reading that the alignment on reinstallation must be perfect. One spline off will make a big difference at the far end of travel. I think I just read someone doing the same thing last week but don't remember any specific tips except that you must do it right.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

I've had my steering fork off a couple times. i don't know if i ever got it on right or not. What I did, was turn the steering wheel back and forth from stop to stop to try to determine the middle. Next I made sure the outdrive was as straight as possible, then secure the fork. It's a little hit or miss. Once installed you could measure the distance the outdrive turns in both directions and adjust it from there. Good luck.

Re: replacing 280 bellows and ujoint

Thanks guys!
I was figuring it was kind of a hit or miss thing....
Was hoping maybe there was a little trick or something. I should have made an index mark before I removed it. Oh well! Nothing like puting things together and taking em back apart! lol
Hopefully get it straightened out tonight!
Thanks again.
