Some guy replied to me:

" I have a new starter and a good used alternatorthat came off a 1991 Mariah with that same v-6.. The block cracked and I bought the starter thinking the used one was bad. The engine had 165 hours on it.. I bought an engine package with 220 hours and installed it useing the old starter because it was already off the block. For the new starter and used alternator I would need $175. Don't want to sell just one. I am in the central valley, but headed to the bay tommorrow for a car. Please call if interested."

you think these are the right parts and this is a good price? sorry but I don't know much about parts.

That seems fair but you'd have to test them.

Have you check the price to rebuild your old ones? Have you had your old ones checked or are you throwing parts at a problem?

I haven't checked the price to rebuild my old ones yet.

but I did get this reply too

"Hello, We are a full rebuilding shop for starters and alternators. If we dont have them in stock we can rebuild yours. San Jose Generator"

My current starter sucks. I think my father took it apart and rebuilt it himself and it still won't start the boat. When we DO start it, it requires 2 batteries or a car to jump start it.

Alternator i've been told has problems too.

Pull them out, bring them to a rebuild shop and get them fixed/tested/rebuilt. Some shops, like the one that contacted you may have common ones already rebuilt. They MUST be marine as chief mentioned.

Good luck.

Let us know what happens.

Listen may not be the starter anyway, could be bad grounds follow the neg cable to the block ground and remove it clean the block and connection shiny clean, could be bad connections at the starter, could be bad cables at the battery.

Mello posted it right have them checked. Both the starter and alternator.

You send DB a e-mail he will tell you what to buy.

Could be you need a tuneup.

Could be corrosion on the points. Did you sand the point contacts?

Did you check the dizzy cap for a good connection for the rortor.

Did you check the wires??

Did you pull the plugs and see if it cranks better with the plugs out??

They wet?
