Re: Replacing Carpet!!! -- Advice???

Your going to need a cats claw (nail puller) for any staples , a putty knife or plastic scrapper to remove the old glue, and a grinder or sander to get the stubborn spots. After ripping up the old carpet, scrap up all the old glue. Your going to need to remove all the trim, seats, motor cover and anything esles thats in your way. Once most of the old glue is up take a sander or grinder to the floor and LIGHTLY scratch up the surface to give it a clean texture.

What i did when i the instal came arround was take a multitude of measurements and then drew a diagram for my potential lay out. Then i layed out the carpet in the clean garage floor. I cut enough to give me 6 inches of play in any direction. This allowed me to make adjustments once it was in while also sizing it down enough to get it in.

Once i layed it into the boat i put the seats in and the doghouse trim etc to see where i needed to place small cuts for stuff and minor changes. I then pulled it all out again and trimmed it down to size.

Cut one side first and then stretch it toward the opposite side. once its is snug and even make your final cuts. Roll it all towards the back and remove. Go through and acetone to clean the surface of the floor. prep what ever glue your useing (ie; water proof floor glue or spray adhesive). I just rolled the carpet back out from back to front, only gluing 1 foot areas at a time. i double check flatness and evenness and continued to glue until i reached the front.

All in all if you get everything together ahead of time you can do this in a day. Good luck

I put new carpet in mine when I gutted and rebuilt the interior. It was no big deal I bought the carpet from BassPro and it has held up well through 2 full seasons of use. However, I used whatever carpet glue BassPro sells and it is terrible. Very thin and fairly ineffective. I would ask on here for better suggestions. Also, I put navy blue on the floor and light gray on the sideboards. I really wish I had reversed this combination because the navy blue shows way too much dirt. Go with a grey or brown or something like that for your floor.

DON"T-Carpet is horrible. It holds dirt, it holds water, it holds sand, it holds seaweed, it wears horribly. Personally, I'd choose another material.

erm..like what Boomers ? suggestions would greatly help.

heres what I do..

take your carpet out..in each peice that it came out of.. ( lets say you have 3 pieces on your floor and sides combined..no matter..get it out in solid pieces.. ) Mark your carpet on were it goes on the floor and sides for locators.. with tape or marker..

lay it out on new carpet..cut 1/2 " beyond your old carpet line just incase your old stuff didnt fit that well..( put your markings on the New carpet with tape and marker showing where to locate the new stuff )

Dry Fit your carpet ! ( everything is cool..then go for it..or trim as needed..then go for it )

Find your centerline on carpet..and work one side at a time..( i suggest you tack the middle first on long carpet runs.. then go one side..then the other )

Use contact cement.. ( WHERE A RESPORATOR !! ) .. Ive done some Major FG work inside..but this contact cement is Very to your brain looopy..It will put you in a bilge passed out in no time !! as a matter of fact..have someone there when you do it just in case.. ( Im very safty if you cant tell :) )

Plan..layout..plan again..layout..sure everything is gonna go..then do it..you be fine m8..

Re: Replacing Carpet!!! -- Advice???

Hello,

I agree with Boomyal. Pulled the carpet up from my boat, and once it is rebuilt it will be replaced with vinyl or some other type of coating. No carpet EVER.

Just my $0.25.

I beg to differ with the Yacht Dr, at least for a runabout that spends a lot of it's life under a cover. I just replaced the Nautolex on the floor of my 31 year old 20 ft Gulfstream. It spent many of those years in the hot, smoggy Southern California heat and sun.. It was faded but still intact. The primary reason I replaced it was due to the floor rotting from the bottom up, underneath the vinyl. You can still see the original Nautolex inside the side pockets. I haven't gotten around to changing it yet.

This stuff is tough, it was non slip, it never ripped and it was easy to clean. Here is the new application.

Halibut slime never comes off carpet no matter how hard you try. It comes off paint and vinyl no problems. Salmon milt won't even come off of vinyl. And those spawners let it all loose once they hit the boat. Floors need to be able to take a bucket of water and wash down immediately.

No carpet ever again on a fishing rig for me.

Would you carpet your kitchen or bathroom? NO! Why not?

i'm thinking of going with removable carpet when i finally get around to mine. some boats would be oddballs with no carpet at all.

I recently purchased new carpet for my boat, and surprisingly I got it from Lowes. Price was right, it is soft, and seems to be holding up well.

YD,

I will only be installing vinyl on the floor, easier to clean, does not hold water. When I bought the boat the carpet was saturated. The sides of the hull will still be carpeted. Can you please expand why this is not a good idea. What is a better alternative than vinyl?

DON'T!!! HATE CARPET. i've got a 1999 23' Chris Craft deckboat, when we got it we removed the removable carpet, it's never been back in the boat.

carpet in a boat is like the thing the wife puts around the toilet, that you pee on in the middle of the night, in the dark, bare footed.

A better analogy could not have been found! 8)
