I want to get rid of the carpeting in my boat as all it does is hold moisture and being original 93' it doesn't look great anymore. Which product is recommended? And is there a step by step anywhere on how to do it? (I usually only turn wrenches) I see some are pre-mixed non-skid and other you have to put in an additive, it will be going over fiberglass if that makes a difference.

The carpeting also runs up the sides of the interior, do I use the same paint as the floor or is it a different smooth paint (they're not very big sides)

This is the best photo I have of what I'll be working with, taken last time I pulled the engine.

Oh ya, I want to stick with good ole white.

I'd like to see more photos of your deck.

In my experience, Nautolex vinyl sheet flooring is very nice on totally flat surfaces, especially where you can wrap the edges and staple down (like the decking in a typical aluminum boat, or resin-sealed wood hatch covers, etc.); but if there are any dips, ridges, channels, changes of plane, "structures" etc., etc., in the surface you are trying to cover--and most fiberglass decks have some of that--you will have a devil of a time wrapping them and the vinyl sheeting will peel up and/or pool water underneath at those spots.

In my opinion, vinyl sheet flooring contributed to my need to replace my deck due to water pooling underneath.

I tried to cheap out and use Rustoleum Marine Topside enamel mixed with their grit additive on my replaced deck. Started chipping and peeling within months, not very abrasion resistant and not particularly solvent or gas resistant.

After much research I am going to try Interlux Interdeck one-part polyurethane next. It is low-gloss, has grit mixed in already, and comes in gray, white, and some sort of blue. And no need for primer over poly fiberglass, IIRC from the datasheet. And I have found no cheaper price for it than here at the iboats store.

As for the interior gunwales, if bare knees are going to rub them, I'd say use a similar color without grit. In my experience a cheap enamel (like the aforementioned Rustoleum product) is fine there, as the gunwales do not see near the same abuse as the deck. I'd recommend semi-gloss (over full-gloss) so as not to blind yourself in the sun.

BTW, an angle grinder and a wire cup brush will do wonders to remove glue residue and leave a good "tooth" for the paint application.

I attached the only other photo I have. Usable deck space upto the cuddy is a whopping 4-5 ft with the rear seats in. The gunwales never get touched expcept for storage and are kinda inset. However as you see the boards next to the gunwales I do use it for storage, most of what is stored there won't scratch but I do keep the anchor there. So I need something fairly tough in that area, which is the reason I figured whatever I used on the floor I'd put up the sides. Kinda want to stay away from any more vinyl/carpet looking for the simplest cleanup/longevity.

The surfaces that had carpeting (in the engine bay) that I removed were pretty flat and smooth. Also any remaining glue just seemed to hose off which I assume because it was always damp.

I'll look into the interlux, thanks.

The divet in the carpeting is where the front of the rear seats sit.

I looked into the kiwi stuff, reviews say it's great but a little hard on the feet. After looking at interlux reviews I'll probably go with that, easy on the feet, easy to apply and it's reasonably inexpensive. Thanks for the help, now to do the work!

Have you looked into a DIY truck bed liner? I dont think i saw it mentioned yet. I had great results even with no experience and poor prep. I think it would be fine to walk on barefoot as well, cant say with 100% confidence on that though...

Whichever route you choose, I would take the advice from Woodonglass, he has been a huge help with my project!

Let us know how it goes...

I am doing a restoration and was thinking about going with Durabak liner. Supposedly its good. May be an option for you.

I did the Durabak for my Glastron Restoration (Link in the Signature) and then I did Gel Coat in the Sea ray restoration. I liked the Durabak a lot, and the new owner of the boat loves it too. I did two coats of the textured, and then one coat of the smooth. It is expensive, but really nice.
