Doing PM replacing manifolds and risers on my 5.0XL RWC mercruisers with alpha drives.Salt water use. and the ones I removed are nearly new looking on the inside.I was stunned at how good they look.Hardly any surface rust.Passages are large and clear .Mating surfaces look new. All looks too good. They are 10 years old .Extremely low hours ,ALWAYS fresh water flushed after each use, winter stored with 50/50 antifreeze.Motors have never sat overnight with salt water in them.I am still going to replace them but if I were going to replace 1 or the other would I be correct in presuming that the risers wear faster than the manifolds..??

Ayuh,..... I guess yer maintenance plan has been workin' Great Charlie,....

I like to clean the manifold gasket surfaces, at the riser joint, with a Flat File,...
Cleans 'em to clean metal nicely, 'n keeps 'em good, 'n Flat,...

The risers tend to rot out where they dump the water into the exhaust stream, at the top, inside areas,...

Laying on the swim platform and reaching down to the drives with a hose and muffs is kind of a p.i.t.a. but it pays off. They look so good that it is hard not to get tempted to put em back on.Charlie

Install a flush kit in your inlet hose, end result should be the same and not be near the p.i.t.a ...... ;)

So that works? I've always considered it but never actually did it. Maybe I will start?:)

Any recommendations? I researched this a while back and kept dead ending, or found a few that people said weren't worth the install. Is it a simple T in the inlet hose?

"So that works?".....ABSOLUTELY !! Works great !! I highly recommend the muffs if you can reach the drive.A flush kit at the inlet hose wont work as well unless you put a diversion valve and flushed with the motor running.Gotta get down in the engine compartment to flip the valve and gotta remember to flip the valve again when done....NO THANKS....Charlie
