When I switch the key to the start position. The starter spins but the gear doesn't engage. I have 12.4 volts at the starter. I bought the boat a month ago and it worked when I bought it.

If the bendix does not rise up it is either stuck or starter is not spinning up fast enuff.----Do not buy a new bendix until you trouble shoot to see what is wrong !!!-----Maybe starter just needs new brushes.----Load test your battery.----Check battery cables and connections.

its not the Bendix drive that is the issue , the starter is dead ,
the starter is not making enough power to get the motor to engage so it just kicks the drive back.
FWIW ,a low amp battery will cause the same issue.

The battery is good. The starter is good. All the conectios are good. The bedix is hanging up. I tapped on the shaft (lightly) and the bendix and it started working.
I want to take it apart, clean it and replace anything that needs replaces. I want to have a reliable motor.
Thanks for all the comments and assistance. That bracket looks like if might be a bear!

Just nuts and bolts work.-----Nothing to it.----Remember that no one on here can see , touch or hear your starter trying to work.----Up to you to do the inspecting / testing.

Bracket is not hard. Nut/bolt in front next to the carb. Two more plus upper throttle mount. Starter wire, pull assembly forward.

You could try oiling bendix but internal starter issues could be contributing.

starter will work fine till its under load ,
on that note , if you are game enough prod at the under side of the drive with a screwdriver while its trying to engage , see if it catches and cranks the motor .

Starters are fairly simple to check out.----Is this the factory original starter or something else ( cheaper ) ??

to true , till there is a short somewhere as i expect is the case with the OPs .
we had a older V4 140 years back that the only way to get it to fire up was to do as above with a screwdriver , once it got past that initial load it needed to get it cranking it would spin the motor over no problem.
we thought it was the drive, but it was the bushings that had ware causing the armature to touch or com close contact with the magnets

WD40 or something similar should clean that up. I've had to use it on my motors over the years. I can't count the number of times a little tap on a starter has brought it back to life. On boats and cars/trucks! I had an old 1968 Chevy C-10 pickup that I only used to pull an old boat, and I kept that old truck going for a year by keeping a hammer in the cab to tap the starter to crank it. It was "3 on the tree", so I backed into the driveway and it was steep enough to get it rolling fast enough to crank. Finally replaced the starter when I got stuck while pulling the boat out of the water and it shut off and I was holding up folks at the ramp while getting it started. I never wanted to be "that guy" again!
Spray it down, then grease it up, you'll be good!

Most outboard starter have a warning on them.------" DO NO HIT WITH A HARD OBJECT "-----It might crack / loosen the magnets.
