Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Ok guys I have some questions?

I sanded half the boat tonight prepping for leveling and filling any holes. If you look in the pictures I have some cracks from the instalation of the winshield. How should I go about fixing these? Do I need to glass from the other side or do a light feathering of bondo and call it a day?

From the looks of it somebody filled holes in a different location for the window which has me puzzled to who did the work? Was it the dealer or was it the boat owner? There are a tone of cracks in the gelcoat which has me thinking it was cured too fast and I am swaying towards the owner doing it over the dealer, what do you all think?

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon UPDATE

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon UPDATE

Ok everybody an update on my Glasspar restoration.

I went ahead and purchased the paint for the hull YIKES the damage hurt my pocket book real bad...

I am full swing into this project and like others, the sanding doesn't stop. My garage is a mess and my car has been outside sense I cant remember. All of my tools and stuff are all blue and white....

Ok onto the project and updates. I purchased a special tool for grooving out all of the cracks in the hull. I moved the top cap into my house where I will do wet sanding and final inspection before putting on two coats of primer and 5 coats of paint. After I am done with the painting shewill be flipped over and all the electrical will be installed.

The hull has been flipped with the help of my Dad, Father In-Law, and my brother and I have to say it is very awkward flipping it over. I am now using the new special tool that you see in the picture to groove out all of thecracks. It is going lightning fast compared to doing it free hand with the dremel tool.
Tomorrow I will be filling in all of thecracks with fiberglass bondo along with Mexi Epoxi. for all of the holes that are going to be drilled out.

The special tool that I am using is made by Dremel and it is for grout removal. The kit is around $20 bucks and it comes with the cutting bit. It took me 2 and a half days to do the port side which had half of what the starordside has accumilated. Using the tool it only took me two hours for everything that you see here. To make the cracks easier to see I used a blackSharpie Marker so I can see much better.

There are a lot of pictures so enjoy...

Here is a picture of where one of the rollers was sitting at this spot for such a long time and made it sink in. I am replacing the rollers with the board rails and will reinforce this area.

Here is the drain plug which doesn't look too bad but will be back to new here in no time.

This next picture is where the speedometer fitting was installed. This is going to be relocated to clear the new rails.

i amstill contiplating whether or not I want to install a smalljack plate for a kick motor. Here are the holes from the mount. If I do reinstallit, I am thinking of getting it powder coated so it will last a long time before installing again with plastic washers and stainless steel bolts.

Here where the mounting bolts from the engine. I am installing a new CNC jack plate to the transom before installing the 65HP Motor to the back. All holes are going to get MEX Epoxi.

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Here are pictures of the top cap. I sanded for 4 days on the top before we brought her in the house. I had already layed down fiberglass bondo on all of the holes and sanded once. I then went back over it again wich is where it is at now. I will sand those down andlook for anmore that need attention before primer. I really want the Top cap to be near PERFECT which is why I brought itin the house. I have my AC at 75 all year round which is a good temp for painting.

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Ok everybody I have an update with a lot of pics. OMG the sanding has got too stop. Just when you think you have everything perfect, NOPE there is more! I started sanding at 120 grit on the entire hull. Proceeded with filling all of the stress cracks that I gouged out with the dremrel tool with fiberglass Bondo by 3M.

I used 60 grit to knock the bondo down. Once that was completed over and over and over again. I then used 220 grit on the entire hull again and again. Once the boat was straight again I began using partchment wax paper to plug all of the holes that I drilled out to get to clean wood. Those holes are covered up with 3M masking tape on the wax paper. Once completed I used the Mexi Epoxi to fill the holes which sucked royally by the way.

Once again more sanding, Mom please make the sanding stop! Once everything was smoother then a babys you know what I washed the entire garage after moving things around and taking my pop up trailer to my uncles house. The boat was rinsed downto knock all of the dust off and the entire garage was washed out.

I then wiped the entire boat down twice with InerFlux 303 cleaner. Once that was completed, I used the primer using the roll and tip method which worked out great the first half. As expected the thinner in the paint dried off halfway through which changes the dynamics considerably when tryingto apply the paint.I had to add some Interflux 202 to the paint. I did not use as much as I should of. But all in all the boat looks far better then I expected.

Now as you see in the last pictures I have the primer on my new hull and is ready for wet sanding and the start of 5 coats of paint. Yeah 5 nights of wet sanding and painting YEAH!!!!

Enjoy the pics.

Ok, Wet sanding truly sucks big time I think my arms are going to fall off. The primer is a lot tougher then I thought it would be. After all of the cussing and swearing I finally got it done. Now for the moment I have been waiting for sence I brought her home. The first coat of paint on the hull.

:DWOW I am speachless.

I may have been robbed on the price of what I paid for my paint locally for almost double the price of online "Urgency stinks sometimes" but the paint goes on 100 times better then the primer. Not to mention how smooth and wet it turns out. There are barely any lines compared to the primer last night. I cant wait, I have 4 more coats to do and she will be so slick water will spread before the hull touches the water it is so smooth.

Well thank you very much. I was wondering if I was doing some stuff wrong do to the lack of responces.

Question: When I wet sand tonight, should I go up in sanding paper from 220-330? When should I start to really go up in sanding paper before my last coat? The last coat I dont want to have to scratch it much before I take my polisher to it.

Hey WB LOOKIN good bud!!! Call Interlux and ask them about sanding between coats. they can give you all the details. I will be painting mine next month with Pettit EasyPoxy and I can only HOPE it turns out as nice as yours. Can't wait to see the finished polished product.

Thanks brother I appreciate it. I called Interlux like you suggested and spoke to a technition. He told me to use 220 only for the primer. Once you lay down the base coat you should use 330-400 for your mid coats. Your last coat whether it be your 3rd 4th or 5th such as me you should use the least amount of grit possiable while leveling the small imperfections in your paint. Meaning judge it really closely, if your paint is really smooth dont use anything below 1000.

Great information and I sent him an email with these pics and he said I was doing an awesome job and I did most all the hard work and to start off using 400. If it is taking a little bit longer to get leveled to drop back down to 330. But from what he see's in the pictures it looks as level as a pro would do. Hot diggidy dam! Youhoo I am sooo stoked and excited I wish it was already Saturday morning.

Oh I forgot to ask?

How should we flip this big boy back over onto the trailer? Before the boat was trashed now it is going to be bling bling. I dont want to damage it trying to get it back in the saddles. Now I have my family coming over to help make it happen. Just wondering what the rest here have done! I am afraid of folding it on its side might cause too much stress on the fiberglass and cause the paint to spider crack, I would be so angry and upset with myself.

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Ok guys the second coat is on the hull. Wet sanding was quit easy compared to last time. I think it only took me maybe 30-45 minutes to wet sand. My paint was really hard this morning whenI went out to the garage to work on her, oh and very slippery too.

But I am getting a little frustrated with the up close appearence. I was told by 3 proffesionals reguarding the use of fiberglass gel bondo. It is a greenish color and I asked if the paint was going to be able to make it all disapear. They all said it would, but after the second coat I can still see most if not all of the spots that I did work on. I am definately doing 4 coats now, and may even need to do a 5th to get things pretty much perfect. I worked too hard for too long for this paint job to look shotty even if it is 5 feet away.

I still have to put the red on the sides starting this weekend. I am going to call Interlux and see what they say about placing the hull back on the trailer and if there is an amount of time before I do that.

Well let me know what you all think of it, do you think from a stupid picture that the paint looks half descent?

Re: Restoration of my 1965 Glasspar Avolon

Please forgive me for this stupid question, but I have read in many other threads to not use bondo that it actually absorbs water. Please forgive me for this question I am a noob when it comes to boat repair. I am currently about to strat the repair of my boat, and I am in need of doing some repair to my hull as well. So any advise or insight you might be able to give me I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Oh and btw, great work bro. The hull looks damn good.
