Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

I'm not sure if the boat even had gel coat or if it was paint from factory. Paint is just something I have more confidence in doing myself so I'm gonna go that route.

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

Was hoping to get some pics of my progress so far but my camera decided to S$%t the bed on me so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Glad I went out and bought a good respirator and sander though.

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

I bet you are!

Just got done staining the bar area in the back of the Coronado. The Engine dog house had a little bar area/cabinet in back, in-front of the rear bench seat. It has several cup holders on top of the cover, and then behind a flip down door, inside it has room for bottles etc...:D. It was all deteriorated when I bought it last summer...so I kept the dog house in the garage when I took the boat to the barn. I've fabricated all new pieces from Birch laminated plywood. It's coming together quite nicely. Should be done this weekend...needs several coats of spar varnish. Stuff doesn't dry so well when the garage is 40 degrees

Haha no I bet t doesn't. glad it is coming together well for you. I'll be happy if I am done by may. Can't bear the thought of being late for boating season.

If its birch cabinet plywood you'll need to seal it good.

Got it covered Admiral :). It'll have about 5 coats of spar varnish on it before I install it. The original stuff was just a veneer plywood as well and it lasted 30 years.

I used beech cabinet ply from home depot, looks great but no good for ext use.
I coated with polyester resin, its totally delaminated after 2 yrs.

Anything that lasts 30 yrs is exterior grade or marine.

Yes it had gel from the mold.. If they painted over that from the factory is anyones guess but it has gel under the paint.

Funny how if your sanding a white boat its not really that big of a deal...when you sand on red or blue then you realize just How pervasive sanding dust is ;) .

Looking forward to more pics :) .

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

The boat never sits uncovered....is on a covered lift all summer....and is covered in a heated barn in the winter. Spar urethane is good protection from UV.....should last a long time. Now....let it sit out in the rain, snow, and sun, uncovered and yes....it's not going to last very long. Well see. If it delaminates....I'll make another one outta marine grade...if they make it with a hardwood veneer....sanded. It only takes about an hour to cut the pieces to size. Takes longer to stain and finish then it does to build it.

I was attempting to Un-highjack the thread :) ..

I would gladly discuss your wood and coatings in a different thread .. real good info for others in that same context..

Currently Im all ears about this rebuild ( Im going to be looking for an older century to rebuild ) .

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

Well you guys were right there is gel coat underneath but its a redish brown in color.

Not working on the boat today. Me and the girlfriend are heading to west marine to look at paint colors and I need to get some primer.

Also hoping to get all of my gauges and switches so I can start working on my dashboard.

Does anyone have any info on installing a stereo head unit? I want to flush mount it in the dash in front of the passenger seat. Do I need to build a box behind or just cut the hole to DIN size and slide in the bracket? Have installed many units in cars but never in a boat.

Last thing is I am on the fence as far as what I want to do with the paint scheme. I was kind of thinking of putting it back to how it was in the before picture or there is the option of going with white and having a blue trim line down the hull. I do kind of the paint scheme I had on it i'm just curious is you guys may have other/better ideas.

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

Sorry...wasnt trying to hi jack the thread. I honestly hadn't asked for any advise on my material selection! I'm a mechanical engineer, I understand materials.

As for color how about a cream color for the bottom below the water line and hunter green top....white interior.

I know that brown color you're describing...have seen it in the marketing catalogs for century....they made Coronados that color too.

Why not put the stereo in the "glove" box. That's where they put them in the Coronados and Resorters. They made a wooden box and mounted them inside the glove box. Look at the picture below...see the stereo...that was installed like that from the the factory.

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

Hey not a problem.

I would mount it in the glove box if I had one, and i wish i did but it is not an option I have so i'll either flush mount it in the dash or hide it under the dash.

Went on a shopping spree at West marine today. I love this store. I've never been there before and the people were so friendly and knowledgeable. Can't say enough nice things about them, it was almost like having a personal shopper. Spent about $800.00 and came away with almost everything I need except for paint as I have not made a decision on what I am doing but did decide today after speaking with the guy at West marine to go with Interlux perfection two part instead of the brightside as it seems to hold up better?

Only things I am waiting on is a couple gauges, two more cleats, and a rear vent but got enough to work with so I can get to work on mounting locations and it should all be in within about a week.

Now i'm not sure if I should roll and tip or try and rent a HVLC spray gun and shoot it. Any suggestions?

Anyways here is a pic of everything I got today

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

I've never painted a boat or car so......can't give you any first hand experience. With my limited experience I would expect better looking results from a spray application than rolling. What if you took it to a local body shop and had them shoot it in their booth. Should'nt cost to much since you are doing all of the prep and supplying the paint. Just a thought.....something to investigate.

You should be able to get new original gauges from A&A Marine....give them a call....they are really knowledgeable about Century boats. They have much more than what they show on the website and they don't really respond to e-mail...more old school...pick up the phone and give them a call.

I dont think renting a gun is needed..

You can get a gun from HF on the cheap.

Do you have a place to spray ? what are your spraying ? Interlux perfection .. or brightside ? etc.. ?

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

Sorry what is HF?

The gun i'm talking about does not require a compressor is that right?

As far as a place to spray goes I would use my shelter, seal it off, add positive pressure and wet the floor real well. I have to work with what I have here unfortunatly.

I think after speaking with the guy at west marine I am going to go with perfection because it seems to hold up better and i've read the brightside does not hold up well to scratches and UV light.

Re: Restoring my 17' Century boat

Never heard of HF before. I went on their site and checked it out.

I have not been able to work on the boat much this weekend because of the weather. We had a decent snowstorm blow through yesterday morning so I spent all day and night plowing snow.

I got to work on the boat for about four and a half hours and was able to finish stripping off the deck and one side of the hull. I also removed all the snaps out of the hull.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get done stripping the rest of the paint, i'm looking forward to getting into the body work plus getting rid of all of this blue dust.

I'll start posting more pics once I get out of the stripping stage as there is not much to see right now. :)
