I got a trick for you. I needed to repair my packing on my shafts and had no time for a West Marine run so I took a white kitchen rag and cut into 1/2 inch strips and then melted some candles and Vaseline on the stove and melted it into the rags. I installed in the shaft and stoped the leaks and after my long sixty mile twisted river trip I still have no leaks.

I bet a few of you have leaking shafts and now you have a easy way to fix them.

The Vaseline is just to soften the hard wax. When done done the wax is still kinda hard but slick

I feel for you. The wife and I drove our houseboat 30 miles in rough water in 30 degree weather only to get lost before we found a dock to park her at. Picked up a load of trash on one prop and shut that engine down. Next day we returned and pulled the junk out of the prop to continue our trip. Generator never started until we made it to the new dock. That couldn't have been as bad as driving in the storm we just had.

i know of people using nylon rope and axle grease, however the candle wax and vaseline is a quick McGyver solution

Should be flax rope and wax but I did not have any flax rope. Grease want hold up when running and I don't think I would use nylon rope ether, might be ok if you don't run the boat.

Has anyone changed there lights to led, most of my lights are g4 led and you can buy a led replacement bulb. From what I read a 10 watt bulb is 130 lumen. My house charger is only a 40 amp and at a party with all the light on I would pull almost a 100 amps so I have to do somthing to cut down the amp draw. I know I can get a bigger charger but first I want to cut down the amp draw. Another reason those ten and twenty watt halogen bulbs aren't cheap and don't last long.

These lights on eBay are 7.99 for two, that's cheaper then halogen lights at a homedepot.

I got my 130 lumen led bulbs in and the might work as a ten watt but not as a 20 watt. I think I will order the 270 lumen bulbs and see how good they are to replace a 20 watt halongen. Now these 130 will not fit in the small 10 watt halogen frame, there to long so I think I will use them in my master water closet.

Re: Restoring the LOST PERL 103'

being an old light club dj...lighting is a big thing to me...

i never was a fan of led.......however im currently building a night club for a buddie of mine.

we are looking at leds and im really impressed. the cost...the hours...the draw....of the lumens are what ever you buy.

so.....naturally, i start thinking boats (will wonders never cease :p)

im going to be doing some hard investigating about lights for the boat building sector here very soon.

but it looks like we have a new winner in the category already !

I don't really like the led but if I can cut just my outside watt draw from 300 to 25 then I need that.
