I was given a 1962 Johnson 5.5 HP outboard. It probably hasn't run in over 10 years. I changed the spark plugs using NGK B6S, cleaned the gunked-up filter and associated glass bowl & cleaned all the fuel lines. I purchased a new tank & associated fuel hose and mixed a 24:1 ratio fuel using TCW-3 oil.
I noticed a lot of fuel pouring from the carburetor when trying to start it. Is that normal?
After awhile, I got the engine to start & run but noticed no water coming from the telltale and I shut it off immediately. I also noticed that the fuel stopped dripping from the carburetor. I guess the impellor needs replacing. Should I change out the condensor & points as well? Any comments & suggestions are appreciated. I'm a novice at this...this is my first outboard!
Thanks - Pete
