I was given a 1962 Johnson 5.5 HP outboard. It probably hasn't run in over 10 years. I changed the spark plugs using NGK B6S, cleaned the gunked-up filter and associated glass bowl & cleaned all the fuel lines. I purchased a new tank & associated fuel hose and mixed a 24:1 ratio fuel using TCW-3 oil.

I noticed a lot of fuel pouring from the carburetor when trying to start it. Is that normal?

After awhile, I got the engine to start & run but noticed no water coming from the telltale and I shut it off immediately. I also noticed that the fuel stopped dripping from the carburetor. I guess the impellor needs replacing. Should I change out the condensor & points as well? Any comments & suggestions are appreciated. I'm a novice at this...this is my first outboard!

Thanks - Pete

Go to the library and borrow a manual. If they have more than one that have your motor, get them all. See which you like. You'll need to rebuild the carburetor and the water pump. You should also change the gearlube. If you have good spark, leave that alone for now.

Couple of things......

- First the OMC Ignitions were calibrated for the temps of Champion plugs.............yes the plugs can be crossed referenced but its not a perfect match. It really is a good idea to keep Champions in the motor instead of NGK, as you mentioned in your other post you cowl says J4J which is the current J4C plug. If I was you that is what I would use.

- Sounds like you have a something sticking in the carb (needle or float) or you have lots of gum and varnish in the passages. The carb is gonna need rebuilding. Its not too hard, and the kit can be bought here.

-Since it did start up for you for a bit, the points and coils might be okay.......might be a good idea to clean up the points a bit, to ensure good spark and make sure they are gapped correctly. But if you have spark now, leave it alone

- I mentioned it in the other thread, but rubber doesnt like to sit, and the impellor would be a good thing to replace if you intend on keeping the motor.

When you did manage to start it, how high up on the leg was the water in the barrel you used?? The pump needs to be able to prime itself to pump water. There isnt really a telltale on these, but exhaust ports on the back. I have a pic of them when mine is running......its a 62 Evinrude 5.5hp, so its the same engine.

My cam roller is worn a bit, so I have to be a little past the start position on the throttle to get it going........you might want to consider that as well...................

impeller yes, wait on point & condenser, plug should be Champion j6C gapped at .030 if going to use for trolling .035 or .040. rpm 4000 you are going to need 'awakening a sleeping outboard and joe reeves carb settings. the faq is down so email me and tell me carbs and awakening. good luck
