Yes. I did it. I connected the battery cables backwards along with the other connections.
At least Im not the only one. Worst part is it just came out of a long storage and has very few hours/
This is my first Yamaha electric start. I had a 5hp and wish I kept it for a troller if nothing else.

Anyway Im trying to ID the parts and start trouble shooting.
I have some pictures and Im getting 18v @ the starter I think it is. Pending**
From what I can find online the Rectifier and or ecu may be cooked instead or also.

Not sure how you could be getting 18v at the starter . but some modern stuff has reverse polarity protection , the reg/rect is probly custard but the ecu might be ok . I would check all the fuses you can find , replace any blown and then hook the battery up the right way and see if it will run , if it does measure voltage at battery to see if its charging ( look for about 14v at 2500rpm , it should at least be more than if the motor is not running ).
And yeah , you aint the 1st and wont be the last :)
