The head of an English Dept.(Irish) in a french university(catholics) was asked why did his people call the English amongst them "les mittens" for decades. The english being protestant of course. His priest had said that they were not called that, meaning mitten (like winter gloves, but were called "les meetings" because they had many meetings in the basement of their church. I thought of it for a few days and when I ran across him again at the " beer only establishment" I had the answer for his student. The French Canadians and Irish Catholics had ten kids and more while the English and Scottish would consistently clock in with one to three. "Les mitten" was without a doubt that what is worn on one's third leg when exploring deep dark jungles. The english used to call them "rubbers". I would have given that kid an A+ for his persitence of the truth.
