Im new to the forum and to boating repair so Im sure i can get my answers here after briefly reading some threads. I purchased a 1988 Rinker V190 19' cuddy cabin at the end of last season. After storing it in a Pittsburgh winter i discovered this spring that a leak had occurred and water had frozen in the floor causing a soft spot. I finally got to repairing it now and after ripping out the carpet i discovered the floor and stringer had rotted out. Im pretty handy with woodwork so that part should be fine. My question is primarily about fiberglassing the floor. Having never worked with fiberglass before I have no idea what i will need to purchase or how much I will need to get to finish this project? Does anyone know of a place in the Pittsburgh area to buy the supplies, if not I can order them online. Im reading threads now for the best way to do the work so that wont be a problem. I appreciate any help on this i can get.

Consider the following thread your one-stop-shop for fiberglass knowledge. I spent til the wee hours of the morning digesting most of the information you will find below, and now I'm in the middle of a Partial restoration. I had never considered doing this kind of work on a boat until joining this forum. YOU have definitely come to the right place.

Good luck...

Welcome to iboats Mikey

ingalp01 has given you the best link about fiberglass info. There are a ton of resto threads to see what you have to do now.....We are happy to help you along with your project ;)

Pics of your damage will help us see what your working with and how to lead you down the correct path to do a top notch job on the repair.

Water infiltration under your deck can cause big issues and you need to check your stringers and transom thoroughly for rot.

Check oops!'s, friscoboater, and my resto threads for great how to info.

Re: Rinker V190 floor repair

Thank you for the advice, after doing some investigation the stringers are bad. I havent been able to fully inspect the transom do to the motor being still in. From what i can tell the upper half is good, but from reading i know that this can be deceiving. I will be starting the floor rebuild in the next few weeks, i need to wait for my cousin to finish cleaning out his garage and repairing the roof, my garage is to small to do the rebuild. I will post pictures soon of the damage and progress. The engine is still winterized is there anything that i need to do before i pull it?

Here's some drawings that will help you understand how to build Transoms, Stringers, and Decks.

www.uscomposites.com is a great online source for materials. I recommend Ext. Grade FIR plywood or Underlayment for your plywood needs. MDO is GREAT for Decks, Saves a BUNCH on resin. Or of course if you want to pay the price Marine Grade. In addition to Resin and Glass you will also need Cabosil, Chopped Fibers, bubble buster roller, Safety Equipment etc..

Woodonglass thank you for the diagrams, they will be quite helpful when i get into that part of the rebuild. As far as stringers, is ply the best way to go or is dimensional wood such as a 1x8 or doesn't it matter considering its all going to be glassed in anyway?

You can use dimensional lumber but MOST everyone on the forum uses laminated plywood. Strucutrally it is more sound.

Yep, looks exactly like hundreds of others. Just keep going and rip EVERYTHING OUT. EVERYTHING!!!! When you are down to a a BARE hull you'll be ready to start asking a set of new questions. Easier if you remove the engine. I can almost guarantee you that your transom is going to be BAD too!!!.

Re: Rinker V190 floor repair

Cant wait to start this project, just waiting on the work space. I decided to keep her out of the water for this season and just do work on her. Gives me a good solid 10 months(Pittsburgh long winters short summers) to do what i want/need to do. Plus I dont have to worry about rushing the work to get in the water, figure take my time and do it right. I was planning on pulling the engine during the quick inspection found rotted engine mounts.

Re: Rinker V190 floor repair

Finally after almost two months working seven days a week at the job I can put some focus into the boat. Im hoping to get some demo done this week and see how far the rot goes. From what i found pryer the rot apears to be from about midships back to the stern including the engine mounts and more than likely the lower half of the transom, however, without pulling the engine i cant be 100% certain. Should i demo the whole boat including the cuddy and start from scratch or sister in the stringers? I have limited space so removing the cap is almost next to imposible. I was considering going with 1.5oz csm and polyester resin for the whole rebuild. Should i also go with some 1708 for extra strength and support or is it a tad overkill?

If you have solid stringers left to work with you can splice them.... 1708 is a must if your going to splice the stringers IMO.

Re: Rinker V190 floor repair

Hello fellow iboaters. Its time to finally embark on the journey of fixing the boat. I was going to do it last year when i realized that i was in way over my head with no knowledge of what to do. So i spent the last 8 months or so reading and reading, watching and re-watching videos to get some working knowledge of what i was doing. Now that the weather is nice here in Pittsburgh I'm ready. My first question is if anyone on the forum knows where i can rent one of these bad boys in the Pittsburgh area? Ive called a few places and they only seem to have the standard size for pulling an engine out of a car. If anyone could help me with this i would greatly appreciate it.

Know someone with a tow truck? Most guys will pull it out for a few bucks.

Re: Rinker V190 floor repair

Got the outdrive off today but still working on getting the engine out. Finding a tow truck that can lift the engine out and over the gunwale which is close to 6 feet in the air is harder then i thought. My friend seems to think that once i demo the floor/stringers that the hull is going to flex, this has caused me to question if he is right with the boat sitting on the trailer. The cap is going to stay on during the rebuild do to the lack of room to take it off. Should i expect the hull to flex a good bit with it still on the trailer? Ill add pictures tomorrow of the rot and some other things that i have questions about.
